Citalopram for health anxiety????

Just wondering if anyone on here has ever took citalopram for health anxiety. Did it help you??? I still don't believe my symptoms are all down to anxiety (dizziness, headaches, chest pain, shortness of breath sometimes, ringin in my ears) but as it's getting worse and my doctor thinks it's all in my head I'm gonna try citalopram to see if my symptoms are down to anxeity and depression. I've took citalopram before for depresion but I've never felt like this before. I have had major anxiety and depression before when I lost my first son (stillborn) but never had physical symptoms like these. Life is in tatters at the moment so willing to try anything. Starting to wonder what 'normal' actually felt like. I don't know if I'm just being hypersensitive to every ache, pain, twinge in my body and wondering if I always had this buzzing in my ears but just never listened to it before. Feel so strange and can't get any answers for it

nicola it is trul disgusting that any doctor would suggest you up the dose 'to see how you are on it...'!!!  I don't understand how GP's in the UK can willy nilly prescribe even NARCOTIC DRUGS and if you ask for a higher dose, they are ok with that. In other countries only psychiatrists are permitted to prescribe such brain-changing drugs. Nicola are you serious about asking for a lower dose than 10mg! That doesn't exist and that proves even more that this does not suit you.  It is making you feel very ill and yet you intend returning to the doctor on Monday to ask for a lower dose, words fail me! 10mg is the lowest dose! Do not go near a doctor and ask for a lower dosage as you wil make yourself look stupid.

I think patients should educate themselves more. We read that this is making the patient feel quite ill and unsteady but instead of stopping it they want to know if they can take a lower dose! It seems clear that this drug does not suit everybody. Why don't patients READ and educate themselves on drugs instead of just accepting habit-forming medication? Anti-depressants are dangerous! They act on your brain and make you less conscious of what is happening around you. Who wants to become like that? I don't know how old you are Nicola but clearly this medicament is not for you. Your body and mind are telling you this. DO take care.

Excuse me but did u read my post at all? I don't appreciate the tone of your reply implying that I'm stupid but I never even mentioned lowering the dose of citalopram to less than 10mg. I WORK IN HEALTHCARE, I KNOW THAT 10mg IS THE LOWEST DOSE. You clearly haven't read my question. I was just asking if anyone has specifically taken citalopram for health anxiety.

And I never mentioned citalopram was making me feel I'll. I've been taking it 3 days and I can already feel my anxiety levels lowering.

Nicola I'm not sure about health anxiety but from my own experience I've had the ringing in my ear, been dizzy for no apparent reason. Been on 20mg for about 5 weeks & amazingly not dizzy, no ringing in my ears. I never would have connected that to anxiety/panic attacks but I think anxiety causes all kinds of symptons & you don't have a clue at the time. So all in all I'd bet all your issues are connected to that. Hopefully you'll notice a big difference on theses meds!

    take care

Nicola am very sad you feeling so low. Some of those reactions are not acceptable and if these are due to a drug, then you would surely be better off without it? I have heard many say for instance, that the effects of chemio are far worse than the illness it is supposed to be treating. I believe anything that makes you feel so thoroughly ill should not be taken. VERY saddened to hear of the loss of your little boy.  There are other drugs you can take other than citalopram as it seems to have had seriously bad effects on many. I fear many of us are guinea pigs and whilst citalopram does seem to help many, it is also a fact that it does not suit us all. If you suffer from pain perhaps it would be best to try 12mg Fentanyl patches as suffering pain is terrible on top of all your other symptoms. I recommend a really good specialist, not just a GP.  Do take care of yourself.

I was on it for 18 years for the same thing, It never took away the anxiety or thoughts just made me numb to it. The thng most Dr.s don't realize is that the pain and symptoms are real. The tensions in our body can cause all kinds of real issues. we do get hyper sensitve but there is always a foundation for the reaction. I have a great doctor who will explain why or why not to beconcerned and will do appropriate tests. it took me a long time to find him but just knowing that he really listens and takes the time to explain what is or isn't a concern helps alot. I still panic a fair bit but can get a better handle on things a bit quicker. One thing I do is give it a 2 week time span. if the concern is not gone in 2 weeks i go to see the doc.it can be in our heads but it is also real in our bodies. Something alway sets us off. do not let your doc fluff it away. You deserve to have things explained.
