Citalopram For IBS

Posted , 2 users are following.

Ive been on Citalopram (a antidepressant) for the last 2 months for my IBS and Ive got to admit its pretty fantastic, theres definately been a measurable reduction in bloating, diarrhoea, acid reflux and pain. I still take a couple of Mebeverine and Merbentyl a day but the time between the doses has far increased :o :D I was sceptical myself, saying to my GP that I didnt really want to be 'out of it' thank you very much but my GP explained to forget about the old ideas of being zombiefied like on Valium and stuff so I succumbed to the thought of the possibility of feeling better and went for it :D It took a few days to get used to and there were periods when I was (the only way I can describe it) psychedelic tripping   The only side effects Ive experienced so far are a niggly headache, very dry mouth and acting a bit daft

Hope this helps someone smile

Oh it's a long story, basically I went to my GPs wondering what I should do about having Gallstones / Bilary Colic as I was feeling like I needed the Hospital big time, the doctor offered me all the medicines I already had (which had me thinking this person hasn't even looked at my notes / the screen infront of her) so I declined them, so I asked for a letter / print out to take to the Hospital to explain my history, I was told no I don't need one, then not being sure if the person was an actual doctor and not some nurse I asked \"wait,, you are a Doctor aren't you?\" then next thing I'm getting walked to the door without even a Paracetamol (which on reflection was fair as I'd already said I was drinking them in overdose quantities) :D

    I cannot believe that!!

Were you coming across as aggressive or something?

All you wanted was a letter, I do not see the problem. These doctors seem to do the bare minimum nowadays.

    It really ticks me off!

So really you did not receive any help!!!

At my Doctors' surgery none of the Doctors are much cop, the one I have been seeing consistently.

Who is the better of the crop, could be a lot better.

It does not help that you only get a pathetic 10 minutes with them and you feel like they are practically shoving you out the door!!

Which sounds like, you actually were.

    Crazy!!!

No I wasn't angry at all, just a bit flabbergasted, as I was lead to the door I was just saying \"You are joking??\" but no she wasn't  In the past it's only taken a single button click to print a letter / history :?

This experience has left me thinking that complaining about my abdomen is just futile sad Patients shouldn't have to feel that way sad

Next time I see my Doctor I'm going to plead for him to get me a MRI scan or something as my intestines (in my humble opinion) are frankly f*cked, also to do my bloods as I think Paracetamol has damaged my kidneys / liver,, I'm having periods like crawling / itching bugs and I've noticed that taking it now makes it worse, especially the lower back pain, it's clear as day I've been taking paracetamol for the pain and it's actually been causing the pain sad

So when did this incident happen with the Doctor who walked you out of your surgery?

Have you ever told your Doctor about your birth defect and that your intestine was resected?

I mean surely that should be part of your medical history and could be part of the problems you are now having!!!!??!!

It was just before last christmas, no I haven't told my GP yet, no it's not in my medical notes, my medical notes only start in the early 1980s (and they're wrong in a bad way) yet this operation I had was in 1971, god knows where the true notes are :?

I've got nine pills left (of the medicines I need to get of a Doctor) so I'll have to see my GP within a month unless I can stretch them out longer :D I'm dreading going because they'll probably tell me off for the last incident and I may just snap and put two fingers upto them

    Hello.

You said in a couple of messages back, that you did not care about your Doctor's surgery as you could get your medication from the community.

    Did you mean the chemist?

What medications do you take then?

Do you think you ever had IBS? It sounds like you have had a lot of problems in your digestive area.

    Hi

Ive been put on Citalopram too, I couldnt get my head around why an antidepressant could help stomach pain.

Ive been on it a week now and probably not long enough to make a difference yet but I dont think anything has imporoved. What dosage did Doc put you on? mine is only 10mg. How long did it take to see improvements? also it just makes me feel a little tired after taking it, no other side effects (yet).
