Citalopram + missed period

Posted , 7 users are following.

Hi, i have been taking citalopram for about 4 weeks now, the side effects are as good as gone. But i have missed a period. It was due around the end of christmas week/begining of new years week. I usually get tender breasts in the week before my period which is a good indication that it is due but i have not had it and there is no chance i can be pregnant because i was steralized 7 years ago, but i have heard stories about women getting pregnant years after being done so im really worried that i may be pregnant and am too scared to take a test.

Has citalopram messed about with anyone elses period? mine is usually regular, i have not missed since i was a teenager. It is usually as reliable as big bed so im a little worried. :?

I have an appointment to see the doctor next late next week so i can talk to the doc about it, but i dont want to be stuck worrying about it. I suppose in a way if this is a side effect of the drug then it will take some of my worry away.

Oh thank god! I'm 18 and im on 10mg of Citalopram. I've been worrying myself stupid over a late period (about 4 days now) and they're usually clockwork with the exception of a day or two. It's not impossible that I might be pregnant but it's very very slim chances and this has given me some relief from constant stressing! I'm so glad I found these posts because my tablets say [b:41002507d8]NOTHING[/b:41002507d8] about altered periods being a side effect of the meds. Judging by everyone else's experiences they really should do something about that, considering it's a drug for [i:41002507d8]anxiety[/i:41002507d8]. Missing a period really doesn't help with that. I'll post again once I know for sure that im in the clear.

I started taking Citalopram around January last year after I lost my father and was going through a very bad time.

The tablets helped me so much but after about 2 periods they just stopped I just thought that this was a side effect and to be honest I was more concerned about being depressed than my periods so i didnt think much about it. I just thought that sooner or later they would re-adjust.

By June I was feeling much better so I decided to go on holiday. Whist on holiday I was taking the pill because I didnt want to chance it but when I returned I stopped and then I had a period, it was really heavy and I thought yes they are back to normal! But then there was nothing for 2 months.

In August I met my Fiancee whilst on holiday for 3 weeks and I had forgotten to get my prescription before I went so I had to half my pills which meant by the time I got home I didnt really feel that I needed to take them anymore, so I stopped taking them. Maybe this wasnt a good idea as I know that you should consult your doctor but I didnt feel bad and I wasnt having problems when not taking them.

Again after I got back I got the period from stopping the contrceptive pill but since then I havent had another period! I am really concerned as me and my fiancee are trying to plan a family and I havent been on them for over 6 months but still there is no sign of getting back to normal. I am 34 so of course I am worried about this being perminant. My only hope is that I havent caused this damage to myself by taking this tablet. Reading these posts have made me realise that this may infact be common in woman taking this tablet and I have made an appointment to see my GP on Monday. I hope that you guys do the same, dont leave it as long as I did. :-)

Hi maxmax78 and everyone -  over a year later from original post smile I wonder if any of you have any info you could share?

I have been on Cit for nearly 4 weeks and have my first period which was 2 days, light and little pain, compared to my usual 6 days, heavy, clots anf extreme pain.

Now, I am not complainingwink this would be a great side effect if that's all it is.

Thing is I am neary 40 and trying for kids (previously failed ivf and natural miscarraiges) so worried about early menopause (someone said they were getting menapause symptoms with cit) or any problems this might bring for concieving.

Anyone had any more info from docs around cit and periods / trying to concieve?

I take Celexa for my depression and anxiety. Believe me, i know what you are going through with the whole missing you period thing. I went 3 months straight without having mine. and i may clarify that i am not pregnant cause i still am a virgin, and im also 15 years old. Earlier today i showed signs that i started. But honestly if you have a thought about being pregnant you should probably take a test to be sure.

I went on Citalopram around 12 years ago and I never had a period again, not even when the GP changed my medication. I was 40ish, newly divorced and had hoped that at some point I would be in a relationship and would have another baby, but it wasn't to be. Now I'm on venlaflaxine which I'm looking to come off and my worry is that my periods will return.  Periods should be the least of my worries from what I've read the journey off venlaflaxine will be hell even with a controlled withdrawal..
