Citalopram Nightmares

Ive been suffering from
Anxiety for 20 years and have been taking Citalopram for the last 10 years without any issues. However over the last year I have been experiencing violent/vivid nightmares, which often results in leaping out of my bed (fright flight) and crashing on to the floor, resulting in several facial injuries. I have now taken to sleeping on a mattress on the floor. I have discussed this with my GP and he squarely blames the Citalopram and has suggested I start to reduce my dosage of 20mg a day to 10mg & taper off completely. He also claimed that changing my medication to another SSRI would not solve the nightmare issue.
In the past when ever I have tried to come off SSRI's it has always ended badly & I dont want to repeat the experience. Its a case of caught between a rock & a hard place.
Any feedback comments would be very much appreciated.

hi peter, sorry to hear what your going through. I was on citalopram for 8 years and this year things got stressful and my gp switched me to sertraline, i can honestly say i am furious he did because i feel so much worst. i will be asking to go back on citalopram this week as i feel he should of just recommended cbt. My advice is you make the choice dont let your gp push you into anything.
