This is my second time taking Cit. I was on Cit 10mg for a couple years and was doing fine..then I missed a few doses and felt fine so I assumed I didn’t need them anymore so I stopped..about 4-5 months after stopping I started to feel disconnected and sad..So I started taking 10mg again..After about 2 weeks I felt good..then I started to feel down again so I went up to 20mg..started to feel good for a few days again..now I feel down again..Will I get better? What should I do? Please reply

I think you have to slowly come off of citalopram. Stopping straight away has caused you to relapse it seems. You are now experiencing all the first week side effects again from starting citalopram for the second time. It is normal to feel like this for the first 2-6 weeks and especially because you have upped the dose. But stick with it as your body will gradually get used to it again. This time though please taper off of the medication with the support of your doctor when he/ she feels you are ready.  You can gradually cut the dosage down and slowly allow your body to get used to less serotonin.

If however you are really struggling with the side affects this time don’t hesitate to head back to the doctors to explain your symptoms.

You WILL feel better soon. I am currently on day 11 of 10mg if citalopram and this is my first time, and my anxiety has definitely started to calm down. Positive thinking. Rest, distraction will help you through I promise.

Yes definitely stick with it !!! Side effects can make you feel this but it will get better in a couple of weeks.  You have come this far so don't give up only to start again. Good luck !! Mark

Oh yes.  I had 2 episodes of depression in my 20's for which I tool Prozac and it worked well. Since then I have had 5 major episodes of anxiety and each time I was prescribed CIT. Always 20mg doses. Each time I experienced the same side effects for the first 5-6 weeks but they all but disappeared after that time. I tend to stay on them for 9 months before weaning off them. I am now 47 and had an episode about 13 weeks ago due to a break up in my 20 year marriage and being made redundant in the same month. The feelings of acute anxiety, lack of sleep and loss of appetite were at their worst in the first 5 weeks but did gradually improve. It is a tough time getting through those first few weeks but it was worth it in the end. I plan to be on these for at least a year this time, maybe longer.  The side effects will pass and you WILL feel better.  There are 2 awesome books to read which really help. 'Depression, the curse of the strong', and 'Recovery letters'.  Both a good easy read which will help you understand what is happening and that you are not alone. In fact, it tends to be strong, loving and caring people which suffer the most but these books help to explain why,

You are definitely not alone. You are on the beginning of a bumpy journey but it will smooth out and when you come through this, you will be a stronger person for it.  Keep the faith and keep chatting on this forum. It really helps.  Take great care. Mark
