citalopram & weight gain ( how long to lose it after coming off cit)

Posted , 55 users are following.

I have been on cit 50mg & trazodone 200mg for 2 years. I have put on 3 stone in this time.

I have started to reduce the cit & just wondered how long it takes to lose the weight gain once you are off the cit??

Oh, Barbara, that's not good as it's the main reason I have stopped taking the medication. I'm managing to keep about 4 lbs. off but that's all but I've only stopped since mid January.

I'm struggling with depression but will not go back on until my weight goes down as that added to the depression.

What more can you do? I, also had thyroid checked and it was fine.

It's soul-destroying when the weight doesn't come off when you're trying so hard.

I'm off to doctors Thursday to be weighed as I've put on so much weight over time she says I need to shed 4/5 pounds as I'm on the border of being obese so this will be my 1st weigh in since she said 2 weeks ago. I'm going to say about others being on cit having weight probs. Scared to come of it but this extra 3 stone is making me so unhappy. sad

jands, the weight gain was my main reason for coming off as I was (still am) so unhappy with my body. I am now obese - something I have never been. I don't LOOK obese - just overweight but that's what the charts say. Life is a bitch.

Hi guys. I only recently heard via LBC radio about anti-depressants making you gain weight.  i googled today and this forum came up.  I feel like I have been in a dream cloud.  i moved to London in 2006 and my (now ex husband) finally "let" me go on anti depressants.  I subsequently left him about 5 yrs ago and have remained on the cit.  i have always blamed my intake of alcohol (I only drink wkends as I work nights).  I do walk a lot abnd have recently bought a bike and nothing works.  I eat reasonably heathy I'd say 90% of the time.  I have put on around 4.5 stones since I moved to london in 2006.  As everyone says it makes your depression worst lack of self esteem/confidence etc.  thanks to you lot I have made an appt with my GP next friday and I am determined to get off these tablets as I really had no clue they were likely to be the reason I'm in this "state".  I cannot thank you all enough Ange x

For 13 years, my doctor refused to put the blame on the different antidepressants Hi was on, Ange.  Even seeing how it was adding to my depression, she still denied it until January when I said I was coming off them - THEN she admitted it.

I put on around 2 stone but, since stopping them, have kept about 6 lbs. off.  Not a lot, but early days.

I recommend you join the 'Coming off Citalorpram sad' forum - even if you are on a different kind as you will get a lot of support and advice on how to withdraw.  Don't do as my doc. told me and come off within 2 weeks.

So glad you got rid of the cause of your depression - it's always 'people'!

      Good luck.smile

Hey Ms Mac thanks for your lovely reply. I think I have been on about 7 years and i cannot believe i had no idea this could be the problem.  like i say i am goin c my GP next wk and she has been supportive throughout my depression anxiety emergency hysterectomy mid last year (which hasnt helped weight gain either haha) i am so grateful to you all and i will look at that forum you mentioned now. thanks again xx

I, too, had an hysterectomy, in 2010, on a cruise.  Hurt my back so much helping my disabled friend that I was in agony.  Ship's doc. was going to disembark me and put me in an hospital in Italy/France.  It was then, he examined my stomach and found a huge 'mass' which he said had been growing for years.  Thankkfully, just a huge fibroid.

When you deal/get rid of the cause of depression, that's when you start to get better.  I feel so much better, since I have stopped and long may that continue.  I hope never to touch another anntidepressant in my life and, if needed, will go down the herbal road.

I'm trying 5HTP which is a natural source of seratonin and is said to help weight loss too so worth trying.

      Take care,

      x

Faced cancer 3 times but once it got me.  Had another couple of traaumatic events in my life and still trying to come to terms with the last one in 2005.

i'm getting there - without the pills.

I was on 40 mg, when I was bad but, normally, 20mg.  Do read that other forum about reducing very slowly.
