Citalopram Withdrawal Side Effects

Hello,

I have been taking Citalopram for 12 years. I started taking 10mg, which was increased to 20mg in 2009. In 2013 this was increased to 40mg and I have been taking this dose ever since. I have noticed that this drug has impeded my reaction times and subdues emotions so I have decided to begin lowering my dose to 0mg over a period of 4-5 months.

I am presently alternating between 40mg and 35mg doses each day and have noticed that I am already dizzy and more tired than usual.

I was wondering if there are any people out there who have been on a similar dose for a similar time period who could give some insight into what I should expect in terms of side effects over the coming months as I continue to reduce my dosage?

Thanks.

    hello Mark,

I can't relate to your high dose, I never was on a dose higher than 20mg. I went from 20mg, down to 10mg, then 5mg over about a 2 and a half month period. I quit all together after about a month on 5 mg. I'm now about 2 months citalopram free and I had some interesting little twitches and tinges here and there, but I was prepared for them. however, lately I've been feeling more lethargic and dizzy on occasion. even my vision seems to get a little weird on me. as if I have a hard time focusing in on things.

I started taking the meds for severe health anxiety, but unfortunately I don't think citalopram is the med for me. it seemed like I had so many side effects it made me even worse with the anxiety. I'm not as anxious now, but I'd be lying if I said the sensations I have make me feel comfortable.

id be curious too if anyone stopped taking the meds and felt side effects for as long as I have.

i would see a psychiatrist and tell him your experience. These professionals know more about anti depressants than GPs im sure a psychiatrist could prescribe a more effective med for you.

i dont think you should alternate. Reduce by five mg, for about four weekly intervals. You must do this very slowly.
