Clean Tests of Every Kind with Ongoing Nausea and Upper Abdominal Pain

About a year ago, I took my wife to the ER with severe upper, right abdominal pain. She was given an ultrasound since gallstones were suspected. Nothing. She was given the GI cocktail. No response. She could not even hold down water. We were sent home and ended up coming back the same day. We have been to the ER several times since, and seen a gastroenterologist. She has had multiple ultrasounds, a CT scan, an endoscopy, and a HIDA scan. Jack squat. No ulcers. No peptic problems. No heart burn. A perfectly functioning gallbladder and pancreas. The only thing she has ever “had” was a slightly fatty liver. That has since been resolved. We have tried tracking her food and can find no relation to the pain. The only thing that has somewhat helped is morphine, and even then, it doesn’t last. Normally after the ER visits, she gets back to normal. Three weeks ago she had another incident with one difference. She vomited. This is significant since she has not vomited in almost a decade. She doesn’t throw up easily. The vomit was almost purely bile. After the visit to the ER, she has had consistent upper abdominal pain and nausea for three straight weeks. We have no answers and we are basically getting shrugs from medical professionals. Zofran doesn’t even help the nausea. We don’t know what to do next or even what is wrong. We are thinking it is something with the gallbladder or pancreas, but are totally at a loss. Seriously, ANY help is appreciated.

Hello David, upper right abdominal could be gallstones or liver. May i ask from what test she got the diagnosed of "fatty liver"? was is through ultrasound? how was her liver enzyme levels through bloodworks? everything within normal range?

It was a while ago, but our records show it was a liver panel. I know she has had the same thing done since and all of her results are in the healthy range. I can tell you that on our most recent visit, the doc doing the CT scan said that he checked her liver as well as pancreas and gallbladder.

Ask for a gastric emptying test to look for gastroparesis which causes nausea and vomiting. If your tests show that the pancreas and gallbladder are functioning normally, I would accept this because tests are usually accurate.

We had a HIDA scan which I thought tracks that. Is what you said different from that?

A gastric emptying test checks to see how fast your stomach is emptying but a HIDA scan checks gallbladder function. Both are two entirely different tests. If your stomach emptying is delayed, this could indicate gastroparesis which causes nausea and vomiting.

New information. We are at an urgent care today and the RN was looking over the tests. Apparently she does have gallstones now, which she didn’t have the previous visits. I’m not sure what to make of this other than to lean toward the problem being the gallbladder malfunctioning.

Sorry to hear this. You have to see a RN to check her diet. She is probably lacking anything that a doc doesn't know about. The whole body is a chemical formula and just does work right when getting the right nutrients. You can get everything back on track with the right nutrition.

Hi, how is her diet like? Is she eating enough healthy carbs, healthy fats and protein? And have you tried adding enzymes?

And does she still has upper pain? how is the pain like? Is it stabbing?

As far as eating goes, we do generally eat a very healthy balanced diet. We are very careful with what she eats. She actually likes vegetables and salads. We have not made any particular enzyme changes.

Hi there. I went through a lot of test. All showed nothing. SO after being sick for 2 years going to ER countless of times. All tests just showed gallstones and sludge. Which made me sick very day. Nausea and vomiting of bile and food not digested. So your wife had a CT with contrast. Many ERs totally misdiagnosed sick people. You need to see a GI SPECIALIST. I THINK she might have a stone stuck in the common bile duct. Which will cause a lot of digestive issues. ERs just want to take people's money and never tell you what issues are they just guess all of the time. so take your wife to a GI. They will help your wife. Bless you both. Hope she gets help soon.

Thanks for the input. She has seen a gastroenterologist. That person gave her the HIDA and endoscopy.
