Clear mucus in stool?

Lately, I've noticed that when I'm having abdominal cramping and then a bowel movement, I'm passing some clear mucus in my stool.  Is this typical of IBS?

Mucus in stool is very typical of IBS. Have you been diagnosed with IBS?

My doctor diagnosed me based on my current symptoms and history of symptoms.  I haven't had endoscopy or colonoscopy because quite frankly I have a slight fear of anesthesia and haven't been able to bring myself to schedule either yet.  The GI doctor didn't think it was absolutely necessary to do a scope, but recommended that it would help with peace of mind.  Which would be great, except that I'm afraid of the procedure.  My IBS symptoms definitely worsen with stress, but I also have no gallbladder and it seems that maybe I'm having some issues stemming from that as well.  I can't eat anything greasy or fatty without it running right through me and giving me stomach pain, bloating, and diarrhea.  But the clear mucus is something I've only really noticed more recently, within the last couple of months (I've been experiencing a flare up of the IBS), though it's possible it's always been there and I've just never noticed it.

If your doctor has diagnosed you confidently based on your symptoms, then it isn't necessary to have scopes.  They are only necessary if the doctor can't diagnose you,you have red flag symptoms. or you want absolute proof you have norhing else going on. In my experience, these procedures don't provide peace of mind but quite the opposite.  They cause dread, before, during and after the procedure when you are waiting for the results. Sedation is highly toxic and I had severe depression after sedation for an endoscopy.  If you are already frightened of the procedure, it is unlikely that you will get reassurance from it. Some people have these procedures and continue to worry that they have something more serious than IBS. Doctor are used to doing these procedures but they don't understand the trauma they cause for us patients.

I wouldn't bother with these procedures, just accept your diagnosis of IBS which is very common after gallbladder removal. If your doctor tries to persuade you, simply say that you are hapoy with your diagnosis of IBS and you feel that a scope would not reassure you but would make you far worse. If I know I can't cope with something, I simply avoid it.  Since stress triggers your IBS, a scope will only cause you an unnecessary flare up.

I had an ultrasound, urine, stool and blood tests which showed nothing.  One doctor wanted to repeat the tests, but the doctor who diagnosed me said they weren't necessary so I accepted this.  I could never have coped with an endoscopy again or a colonoscopy.  I would have had to opt for a barium meal or barium enema.

Viv, it is quite possible to have the colonoscopy and be awake. I had this myself. Just a med to calm those "nerves" is all that is required. I watched the whole procedure on monitor. It would do wonders for your peace of mind.
