Clobetasol

I am in a love-hate relationship with this medication. In the past, it has helped with the itch and fissures but lately, I have noticed that I am starting to get yeast infections very easily. I read that long-term steroid use can make you more susceptible to yeast infections. It is all starting to feel like a vicious cycle! Is anyone else experiencing this and how do you keep your yeast in check?

Thanks,

Ann

Hi there, thrush and lichen sclerosus go hand in hand..if you google it you will see how they are closely linked to each other. Every time I have a LS flare I almost always have a problem with candida. I actually believe that it is candida that is the initial trigger and cause of Lichen Sclerosus. I have IBD and like LS there is no cure but interestingly recent research has found some small connection between candida and this disease. I'm not convinced Clob is to blame for thrush but maybe you are super sensitive to it.

Thanks, Guppy. I have read up on LS and Candida. Steroids make your body more susceptible to yeast infections because it lowers your bodies immune response which usually keeps yeast infections at bay. If you are on a steroid long term, you are at greater risk for developing yeast infections easier than if you were not on them.

I guess if you are using steroids all the time then maybe that would cause a problem.  This is why i don't use the Clob for maintenance. I think it is asking for long term trouble..I use the clob for a few days when needed and then put it away and I might not use it again for months.  What that means is that although i was diagnosed in 2013, five years ago, I have probably used the Clob cream about half a dozen times.

      Hi Guppy,

Thank you for your input, I am learning so much from you all. I wish doctors had more knowledge, he told me to use Clobetasol every week to keep the disease from advancing but what I have found is that it works only for bad flares. I will start using it only as needed and see how it goes. Thank you so much!!

How are you working to suppress the disease?

I think my diet helps me.  My diet is limited, I am gluten, lactose, salicylate, histamine and sulfite intolerant.  So, as you can imagine I cannot really overindulge too much...although I do have chocolate sometimes..which is asking for trouble really.  I rarely flare and have no white plaques of skin. My main problem lies with the fact that I did not use dilators for a long time and my Vjay is smaller now and I am married to a 6' 4" guy......  In my defence I was battling ulcerative colitis for a long time and felt too exhausted with that problem to focus on my sexual health....so it is important to use dilators.

Hi. I was told by my Gyn and DPT to soak in warm water with 1 cup of baking soda. It's supposed to balance the pH so yeast can't grow as quickly. I also have eliminated sugar and dairy which is supposed to help too. I was also told to drink more fluids to flush out yeast. I hope this helps. I was told very firmly NOT to self treat the infection. Always get a culture first. Take care!

Hi, my GP says Dermovate shouldn't be used long term it's only for flare ups...if it is used all the time it causes thinning of the skin which is more susceptible to infection and splitting...he has given me elecon ointment for normal days and dermovate ointment for big flare ups . Hope this helps...x

Thank you for letting me know about this! All my OBGYN gave me was Clobatasol and told me to use it once a week for the rest of my life. It has been thinning out my skin so bad that when I wipe after going to the bathroom, I sometimes rip. What does the elecon ointment do?

It's the same steroid ointment but not has strong and it also has a antifungal in it too for thrush type symptoms just in case! Take all your knowledge and ask questions...xxx

HI cally- just wanted to check how u are using Elecon( or mometasone) cream. Do u think it more appropriate for daily use than Dermovate?

I hate to be debbie downer but I feel clobetasol is the biggest culprit here. My husband is going through topical steroid withdrawal caused by mild use of topical steroids that are less than half as potent as clobetasol. Please google tsw/rss- there is a private fb group of 10k+ Sufferers of tsw. Potent steroids keep our immune system compromised and cause not only yeast infections but much more.

I’m glad we are here together in this group so we can find natural solutions that are less dangerous to our health but can still heal LS- but the word needs to get out about the danger of topical steroids especially clobetasol which is the strongest. Once we become resistant to that, we are screwed because there is nothing stronger. I hope this post does not get taken down as it’s vital that people are aware of the danger of steroids
