Clobetasol Application

Hi Everyone,
I am currently on week 4 of a flair up type thing... I am wondering how you ladies that use clobetasol apply it? do you only apply to white plaques or do you apply to the whole vulva? I have been applying, sparingly, to the whole vulva but I think its irritating the healthy tissue?
I am feeling really low right now. I cant figure this thing out. I am taking recommended supplements. I have tried emu oil, borax baths, castor with lavender... These help for a little bit. Then two weeks ago I got a raging yeast infection that I assumed was LS so upped my Clob application to 2x a day for some relief. this made the yeast infection very bad. I treated with one diflucan, which got rid of it for a week and a half... but now thats back. The one dose probably wasn't enough to beat my steroid bolstered infection. All in all I don't know what is going on down there.

I feel for you Jessica. I too sometimes wonder what the hell is going on and I am currently experiencing a flare-up with renewed itching and soreness which I can't put down to any changes in my routine which has brought me down.
I was told by my GP to apply steroid to the affected areas whenever I felt symptoms flaring, as well as applying it for maintainance every 4 - 5 weeks for a week. So I apply it to the whole area that is itchy and sore - it isn't working on this flare yet but it has only been a couple of days. I don't get any side effects from the steroid but I am on a milder one I think; Betnovate. I have been advised to only apply it where you're feeling the symptoms but that's not easy as we all know, it's bound to spread a little.
I guess you need to persevere, but perhaps ask your doctor if clob is unadvisable when you have a yeast infection and if there is anything else you can use.
Good luck.

Hi Jessica
you poor thing! you have most probably over done the steroid a bit. Not that its caused the thrush sometimes it comes hand in hand. Maybe lay off steriod until the thrush has cleared especially if its inflamed. Ive learned not to try too many things at once. ITS trial and error you will find what works for you. I just use castor oil to moisturise, Hydromol to wash. Steroid just when i get that itch. I deal with the thrush only occasionly with a gel pessary as its soothes the area plus a tablet.

try Cortizone 10 instead of Clob. Use it morning and night all over the area for at least 3 days. Get a squeeze bottle, and cleans the area with warm water EVERY time you void. Apply coconut oil, or Emuaid after each void. Hope you feel better soon.
I also find cool compresses help...

Hi Jessica,
I got told the figure of eight area and the vulva and beneath the clitoris to stop any fusing. L S can be red and sore not just white. My white has now gone to pink but the edges of the minora are all black the dr said its post inflammation and it will fade, hope that helps.

Sue, were you told to apply it to the whole area even if there were no signs everywhere? My doc told me about the figure 8 and drew an illustration of where the issues were which was helpful. Now I am applying only where there was still some remaining dryness and white skin on labia edge. Am now feeling an uncomfortable twinge on the hood so am using it there (although the doc said she saws no signs). I am VERY glad you shared this info re skin possibly turning BLACK. I would no doubt absolutely panic if I saw that.

HI
Yes I was told to apply it all over as it was sore and red. I only knew it was so sore when they examined me like the skin wont almost stretch now. When it is active it burns suddenly for no reason. Thats when it needs clob on it as it means it is in an active phase. I wasnt too worried about the black I just think the clob did its job and also it was a symmetrical line on the edge down each side of the lower minora so Im sure it will fade, If the edge is white put some clob on the edge. In between the minora and majorca mine was needing clob and I didnt know Im glad the dr spotted that and now its pink. If you put clob on the white will go. Interestingly the same time as the flare two weeks ago I also had oral tongue thrush and the dentist said I was run down so maybe our flares are because we are stressed or tired. x

Hi Jessica, for what it's worth my gyn told me to apply the steroid (mine is milder than clob) only on affected areas. When I expressed concern re using steroids in general her response was it is good for problem skin and bad for healthy skin. The regime has been pretty easy to remember and I try my best to stick to it. Of course, it isn't always easy to figure out where the problems are or what exactly is going on.
I had a problem with the steroid only once after a bout of diarrhea by probably applying too much. The result felt very much like an external yeast issue. Felt very inflamed so I stopped using it for a week and the skin calmed down. I told my gyn and she said what I did was the right thing. Once the inflammation calms down, resume applying.
When you say you are suffering from yeast do you mean internally? I haven't gotten that reaction, but at one point the doc prescribed an anti yeast cream for me to apply sparingly along with the hormone cream at the vag entrance because I had been feeling a bit sore (no itch). It didn't improve anything so now if I start feeling sore I will just skip a night of using the hormone cream and that seems to work.
I would guess people with any skin condition arrives at ways to use medications that works for them. In our case we can barely see what is going on which doesn't help. Because of the destructive nature of the disease we are all very concerned over it's spread and fear we are using the meds incorrectly.
My doc also said other natural treatments can soothe, but will not control LS like steroids do. Some women don't agree with that, but I am not going to forgo the steroids unless I find something that clears up or stops the progression of LS.
Is your doc testing for yeast and prescribing meds or just giving you you prescriptions to use as needed?

Hi Beverly,
Thank you so much for your response. I have been having a lot of hormonal issues, which I think triggered the initial yeast infection. I didn't realize it was a yeast infection (didn't itch inside, it just burned at the entrance during sex) externally I was swollen and red. I just assumed that red/itch meant an LS flair. I spent 1.5 weeks applying clob 2x's a day to a yeast infection and was so distraught because I could figure out why the steroid had suddenly stopped providing relief. Finally I had a good look and that's when I realized it was def yeast. So, I took 1 diflucan. within 3 days it was all good. Then a week and a half later it felt like the yeast infection was back, so I took another diflucan (as directed by dr), then I checked because the entrance started itching and now it looks as though one of my white patches has gotten a lot bigger.
So this morning I applied the clob with a q-tip to only the white patch as I am wondering if the other redness is skin irritation from clob/yeast cream/who knows haha.

I know, it's confusing. I think the doctors use a lot of guesswork too as we do all react differently. They at least can SEE what's going on better than we can though.
I have never used the steroid twice a day, just at night. Wouldn't it just get absorbed into underwear and wiped off with TP if applying during the day?

I'm also on the LS Yahoo group and after hearing about someone on this forum using olive oil, several of us on the LS yahoo group have tried it and are experiencing positive results. Some are using plain organic extra virgin olive oil and a couple of us are trying organic ozonated olive oil. I massage it into my vulva skin in the morning (after a warm soaking) for the last three weeks and will begin adding a plain organic evoo twice during the day. I also rinse with water after every urination and pat dry. My derm is on board with this and I am using the propolyene glycol free Betamethadone .5 ointment twice a week as she requested until she sees me again in 3 months. I think she'll be amazed at the healing. I'm very thankful she's on board with me trying holistic approaches. She's younger and eager to listen, learn and share new information. The last thing I'll mention is that when I eliminate wheat gluten and cane sugar from my diet I have no itching, but when I don't the itching returns (at least for now, maybe that will get better too). Best of luck to all.

Peg, I also have a relatively young gyn who is open minded and is a good listener. It does make things so much easier to discuss if the situation is not adversarial! The next time I see her I want to suggest that all the gyn's in the medical group give some sort of survey to their LS patients to see if they can begin to deduce if there are any common denominators among us. As it stands now no one seems to know anything. It isn't even certain LS is an autoimmune disease! I don't know how that gets determined, but surely it should be properly classified.
But I think it's important that they know our medical histories if nothing else. That's one problem with specialists...their focus is too narrow. And that's what makes holistic medicine so appealing...they are considering ALL of you.
