Clobetasol Cream, does it work for you?

Since being diagnosed with Lichen Sclerosus last February,  through trial and error, I have discovered, sometimes painfully, what works for me with regard to using Clobetasol  cream.

When I initially had the typical white LS plaques, which were on the inside of my Labia Minora,  I used Clobetasol and it worked quickly, and effectively, and I think it took around a week for them to clear up, using it twice a day, and fortunately they have never returned. Also when I have had pain, and soreness on my clitoris, I will use it twice a day for around four days, and I have found it to work really well for clearing this problem  up quickly.

However, Clobetasol did not work for me when I had a sore area (a lesion) about half an inch away from my Vjay.   I applied the cream carefully, and the next day I had a seriously nasty red rash running everywhere, and up the crack of my butt!! and so I stopped using Clob in that particular area after that, and the next time I got a tiny sore in a similar area I bathed in salt water and used baby cream, Desitin I think it was initially, and I think I used vaseline before bed, but  only for the first couple of days, after that I switched to bathing and then using hardly any talcum powder on a powder puff to make sure that there was no moisture down there whatsoever, and this worked really well.  I have found sore areas need cream initially, but then  they need to be kept dry, and after a few days my sore area cleared up!  So for me, using Clob on my Vjay works, but for on the surrounding skin not so much.

With regard to maintenance, I dont use the cream.   My Vjay looks normal, no white patches, cuts etc and so I don't see the point of applying cream to areas that show no visible sign or symptoms of Lichen Sclerosus.  I do believe in the routine of spraying after using the bathroom, drying and lubricating, this I think stops fusing from occurring and so it is an important routine to have, of which I always stick to rigidly!..so this is what works for me.

Guppy...To begin with,on biopsy diagnosis, I wasn't sure what I was going to do.

    Steroid ointment/cream is routine treatment.

I did as others have done and used the steroid for intial period but for the past couple of weeks I have stopped.

I am not convinced it was doing much for me!

Instead I am taking a hostilic approach with a healthier diet and life style.

As LS is an inflammatory dry skin disorder I began to use oils containing natural fatty acids to protect and feed my skin.

Not only do I smear the vulva area I spread all over my body after a daily shower.

I use cold pressed avocado oil , it's penetrating quality enables the oil to soak deeper into the dermal layers more than many other oils do.

I have also started putting two teaspoons of avocado oil into a green smoothy that I make each morning in a nutribullet.

I have upped my good fat intake as I think the advise over previous years to limit fat has done us no favours.

My skin is looking better and not as dry and the eczema on my foot is looking better too.

My vulva area is itch and inflammation free and the white patches are starting to improved.

Hopefully I will continue to go in the right direction without the use of steroids.

Norma, I like your ideas, all sound good.   I too have upped my fat intake, and I have started eating butter even though I am lactose intolerant (a lactose pill sorts that) Dairy is very important I think. Also remember how people were advised against using using salt on their food? That was bad advice as well, as good sea salt is vital for your health, its full of minerals that our bodies need.

Hi Guppy, glad you have found a good way forward with your LS . I have found after some trial and error that if l wash with aqueous cream , pat dry and apply vaseline lightly over the whole area l am mostly fine. When it flares up l use the clob once a day for 6 days and it so far is sorting it out. I was much better after having a biopsey where three areas were cut out , interestingly l dont get soreness in these areas anymore. It really is a case of what works for one person wont work for another . X

Winifred, its good that you have found what works for you! It really is a  relief when you get to that place where you are not so freaked out about LS anymore, and that you have a routine in place that appears to work well...it can take a bit of time getting there though!

Well, I decided to apply a little Clob to my healthy looking though menthol -type burning vulval area. Till now I only been rubbing it into my largish lesion. The result wasn't good and have had a day of nasty burning. Spent most of it lying down or in the bath! Obviously not the answer so back to the drawing board.  Also I spent a small fortune having an emu ointment sent from USA and it's too strong and also burns! Sensitive little soul I am. Back to the emu oil I was using  and maybe I have to accept this may be as good as it gets. I Have my appointment now to see a specialist in November 2 in a city that is large enough to support one in vulval health, so great! Fingers crossed for some real help. Although I am tending to think that the real experts are right here! X

Yes! I agree with you. We have the greatest investment in this and will surely find a way between ourselves.

Lynne, sorry to hear that!!!...at least you have tried it, and now  know it is not for you..one lady that posts on here regularly has had good results with Manuka honey, which if you Google you will see that there is a lot of information on this.   I buy it online, its not cheap, but you really dont need a lot, maybe this is something worth pursuing...I use emu oil and have never had any problems, and believe me I am sensitive! and so it does sound like you are super sensitive for sure! Its good that you have an appointment to see a specialist, hopefully they may have some ideas.

Hi Guppy..Seemingly it is the bee saliva enzymes in Manuka honey that has beneficial qualities. Who would have thought it!

Amazing isnt it! my hubby has a strange wart on his face which has definitely reduced since using the Manuka, that being said, he has decided to have it removed to be on the safe side...

    Hello Guppy, hello everyone,

I was diagnosed about three years ago at around the same time as for a low thyroid.

I was advised to apply clob daily for the first two weeks, then to ease off to an increasingly reduced regime. Funnily enough it has fitted in with the regime recommended in the start up here. I naturally rubbed in for an extended period as this gave me relief.

Three years on and I'm reviewing whether its actually helping or hindering. That's where I am now. So thank you very much for the question!

Bindey, maybe its time to look for something else so that you can alternate between the two,  as I have a feeling that LS likes change every now and again.

Hiya bindey....How many times has thyroid issues been linked to LS!

Surely hormone unbalance in the endocrine system has got to play a part in LS.

Thank you very much Guppy. Well I think I am ready for a trial of no med in addition to no grains. I just want to see if I can maintain an even keel.

I'm sure I should be giving up other things too, but for now I want to try one step at a time!

I do crave sweet things, however I  will allow myself some healthier snacks and treats made with real sugar or fruit sugar.
