Clomipramine

I'm not sure if it's a good idea to ask this or if I'm just going to end up scaring myself! But I was wondering if anyone had taken Clomipramine?
I was on Mirtazapine which I'd gotten on quite well with initially but I felt like it had stopped working, so my GP advised me to increase the dose. Unfortunately my asthma which normally isn't a problem got worse when I did this so I dropped down again and it resolved. I am not sure it was the Mirtazapine affecting it but I didn't want to carry on in case it was. I spoke with a MH nurse who suggested trying Clomipramine instead (as I had a bad reaction to an SSRI a couple of years ago, so we are avoiding these) as I also have fairly bad OCD and Clomipramine is said to be useful for this. My GP was very good and got in touch with a psychiatrist to find out about dosing and things as she said it's not prescribed so often now and she wasn't sure about it, but she's now prescribed some. I came off the Mirtazapine a few days ago (GP said give it 24 hours before starting, I thought I'd give it a bit longer) and wow; there was me thinking the 15mg wasn't doing anything for me, since I came off it I've been feeling even more depressed and keep crying! So I'm keen to start the Clomipramine but just (having an enquiring mind as I do) wondered if anyone had any thoughts about it or experiences of it, or things to watch out for. Thanks!

Hi Chloe
I had clomipramine some 20 years ago and it was the first anti depressant given to me. It helped me so much. I never thought I will recover. I did. My son, 19, is taking clomipramine, started about 7 weeks ago. The side effects he had was dry mouth and constipation, which subsided when he was into the 3rd week. Maybe every now nd then re constipation.
It is an old medication and doctors today prefer to give the newer ssri as they have much less side effects. My son tried about 4 different SSRI, SNRI but did not improve. He has generalised anxiety with intrusive thoughts, not compulsive, brought about by way the high school he attended. Long story short, so he developed anxiety if he should or should not speak up etc etc, all through the 8 years. It is really heartbreaking and we hope the clomipramine will work. Chloe, when I took this medicine, it worked faster than it is for my son. I guess it depends on severity and how our body reacts. His psychiatrist says it is a very good anti depressant , different from SSRI, its a TCA, and we should really give it a good try. My son is on 150mg for 4 weeks today. Apart from side effects, I do not see the bad in clomipramine in my opinion. Hope this helps. Let me know how you are. Take good care. You are not alone.

Oh yeah, that's withdrawal from Mirtazapine. Definitely, I am a guy, and when I came off Effexor, I felt the same way, I could cry at the drop of a dime and watching TV shows that had a sad ending, forget it I would bawl my eyes out. Someone said something that hurt my feelings, again, cry my eyes out. I dont cry usually, so this was very new and very embarrassing for me. So I feel your pain. I think your instincts are correct to give it more time, more time to get the mirtazapine out of your system, and more time for the Clomipramine to start working. So dont give up, its going to get better. Just hang in there.
