Hi: In the old days mothers would look at their child's tongue to diagnose illness. The tongue is actually tied to the digestive system. If the bacteria goes bad on the tongue then it has gone bad in the gut. It could be caused by taking a course of antibiotics or having a bad illness. Or it could be just a bad diet. Many people take probiotic capsules and have found that it helps. It does take a few months for things to improve. I recommend that you do more than that. If you can start juicing organic vegetables it will change your life. You can use a blender also. I use a blender because I need the extra fiber. I make a quart in the morning and then have some every three hours or so. In a large glass I pour 8 oz of juice, 2 oz of organic yogurt and some pure water to thin it a little. I drink this when my stomach is empty. If you jeep it up you change change your gut bacteria from bad to good. Bad bacteria makes more gas when sugars or carbs are eaten. That gas then works its way up while you are sleeping and can actually be the initial cause of acid reflux. After it pushes acid into the esophagus, it causes a chemical burn. Then the next day when you eat something you will feel the burning in the esophagus. Then come the antacids or PPi drugs.

Why don't you try this and see if things improve. If not I have more information that can help. John

One more thing. When my bacteria goes bad, I will do a course of pepto bizmol to kill out the bad bacteria and start with a clean slate. You can take pepto every 2 hours, a total of 4 times in one day. The tablets work best. Generic bismoth is okay.

Then brush or clean your tongue thoroughly. You are now cleaned out top to bottom. Now start the juicing.

Another thing. Before bed after brushing your teeth, take a large spoonful of yogurt and swish it around in your mouth and then swallow. Stop using any mouthwashes that kill bacteria. They will set you back. Dinking alcohol should be stopped until three months have passed. Then it is okay because it does not appear to make it into the gut before being broken down.

Hi Kate: First, to answer your question. I use mostly organic carrots, apples, spinach, kale, beets with some added protein powder. This smoothie provide vitamins and mineral your body need to heal and recover. Drugs do not provide that.

Everyone is different. And the cause of acid reflux of each person can be different. I have taken PPi drugs in the past and at first they feel like a cure, but then when you start to feel the side effects of improper digestion. You think you will just stop taking them. But they are very habit forming. You will get acid revenge; when the stomach makes much more acid and seems to never stop.

They did a study on PPi drugs and then had two groups of healthy people take capsules each day. One group got placebos, one got PPi drugs. After a short period of time, all participants were told to stop taking the capsules. Almost all of the healthy people taking the PPi drugs now complained of acid burning stomach pain and heartburn. The placebo group was fine. The drugs caused an acid revenge condition even with healthy people. What will they do to a person with acid reflux? They will likely end up begging for some kind of surgery to help.

Most people with acid reflux just have a weakened esophageal sphincter or their intestinal bacteria has gone bad. That can be caused by one infected meal.

Because there can be a number of causes, I just recommend the simple things first. Even two years after I cured my acid reflux, I still do a daily maintenance of the vegetable smoothie and yogurt. I have a separate issue of having a abdominal hernia where my small intestine gets strangulated. The smoothies and yogurt keep me regular and have mostly prevented the intestinal obstructions.

That was the initial cause of my acid reflux. I was determined to find a cure that did not include surgery. I came up with my carbonated water treatment. It has helped many people strengthen their lower esophageal sphincter. But, not everyone. Here is how to do it:

Buy 5 large bottles of carbonated water. On an empty stomach drink 8 oz of CW. Then focus on not burping. It may take some practice. This retrains the sphincter to stay closed and strengthens the muscles around it. You can buy flavored CW. I like berry or lemon lime. It should be unsweetened and no sodium.

Do this 5 times a day, holding down the burp for 5 minutes. If the burp leaks out, don't try again until 2 hours have passed.

Each week add 1oz of CW and 5 minutes to each session. At week 4 you should be up to 12oz of CW and 20 minute sessions. Holding down the burp becomes easier and easier over time.

In the meantime, elevate your bed 8 inches using old books. Sleep on your left side all night if possible. Never on the right side. This is because the stomach is shaped similar to a tea pot.

      Sorry for the long reply.

I have always recommended against surgery. You need to investigate reviews of people who have had this surgery. It is basically sewing fragile stomach tissue to fragile stomach tissue. The first time a person gets sick and vomits, the whole thing can be torn apart. Please see my reply to Kate above. Let me know if you have any questions.

Hi Marian i have it a long time too .

Are you suffering with Gerd are you on ppis meds

Hi! I was diagnosed with esophagitis grade A (Los Angeles). Four months ago I was on ppis (Nexium) for 1 month but without absolutely no effect. I gave up Nexium and specific food thinking it is impossible to suffer from gerd because I didn't have any heartburns. A lot of doctors missdiagnosed me saying that I suffer from candida or they just refered me from one specialist to another.

1 weeks ago I was diagnosed with LPR by an ENT doctor. I was put on Lansoprazole for 2 months. I did a lot of research and started to implement an antiacid diet, I raised the head of my bed, I don't eat 3 h before bed etc. (the doctor only prescribed pills and that was it) So far I can feel a mild improvement.... I am waiting.

What made things worst for me was that the LPR symptoms started 3 days after I had unprotected oral sex with a lady whom status I didn't know (that day I also had a bit more alcohol than usual). Additionally, I do crossfit.... And one particular move in crossfit is handstand pull ups (where you stay upside down for as much as you can, leaned against a wall).

I will see how my symptoms will evolve. I am really worried and not ready for this diagnosis.

      Keep in touch!

You need to request for more testing. A full blood workup. Full STD test. Don't hold back any information from your doctor. You need an accurate diagnosis.
