Coccyx pain after THR

Posted , 5 users are following.

Had THR 5 weeks ago and having great difficulty sleeping on my back because of coccyx pain.I can't bear to feel that bone on the mattress.Propping up my pelvis on a neck cushion. Also suffered bed sore on lower back near base of spine.Has anyone had a similar experience and will it improve?

      Hi Beck

Thanks for that positive answer. My hip is doing really well but the coccyx problem is setting me back.Dreading going for x Ray at my 6 week check up.How long until it improves? Are there exercises that would help?

      How are you doing?

    dear janet,

so sorry to hear this - I personal had no problems with it but heard from someone that sheepskin might help prevent bed sore ..

how are you doing otherwise, sweetheart ---

That sounds so painful Janet. I like Renée's idea of the sheepskin though.

I also heard a few people refer to a 'donut' - the kind of air cushion that I used after childbirth. I wonder if that might help.

I think you should call your GP though, I don't think you should have that much pain on the coccyx.

As usual try heat (pain no swelling) or cold (swelling/inflammation) packs to reduce this. Please keep in touch to let us know how you are doing.

    Big gentle hugs.

I only slept (actually didn't sleep) on my back for about a week.

I slept on my good side...I know they say it's a big no no...with a pillow between my legs (I get horrendous acid and struggle with sleep anyway).

I am now 6 weeks post op and am back to my normal sleeping on my front position. I went back to work 3 weeks post op

I know the guide lines but I also know my body and how it feels.

Ps. Just had my first bath for 6 weeks and it was great!!!

    hi janet,

checking in with you and hope you found a solution ...

how about a donut cushion so coccyx does not touch matrass ?

is it only when you lie down or also with sitting ?  must be so annoying ....

    angel blessings

      Hi Renee,

Here I am 11weeks post op! My back problem improved when I was allowed to sleep on my good side st 6 weeks. The hip is really good and sometimes I forget it!Been discouraged last few days because I still have heel pain in my good foot and back has gone worse. I wonder if I've overdone it?Went on exercise bike yesterday for about 2 minutes and realised I was bending not sitting straight.Nearly 3 months now and expected to be more pain free.
