Coconut Oil

There seems to be so much conflicting information about using Coconut oil. I use it in coffee and enjoy it. Funny enough it helps soothe my IBS. Any other opinions would be gratefully received

Hi Stephen, this is interesting, as I believed until now that coconut oil was only for external use but as you find it helpful I will consult the experts at Holland & Barret tomorrow morning and see what they have to say, just to be on the safe side, as it were, myself I have very chronic IBS and a prolapsed bowel and understand what it is to suffer.  As for tips, and you may be reluctant to try this as lots of side effects with it, but I tried a course of steroid tablets and they helped alleviate things enormously for me, although the enema version was a disaster with me needing the loo far more often than I "normally"(!!) do, don't know if this helps.  i realise steroids are quite drastic measure but I tried them as nothing else was working and I was getting more and more desparate, with best wishes, Fiona

Hi Fiona, my symptoms for IBS are more painful than chronic. They have been really bad for the last month. Over the last month I've been eating salad & bananas. Knocked off bananas this week & pain has drastically lowered. As for coconut oil I blitz this in a "bullet" with coffee & milk, it's delicious and according to a lot of sources it's very healthy. Holland & Barrett sell this but they are very expensive.

Hi Stephen, sorry to hear you are in pain, mines painful too, but the frequency, well, I don't think anyone including the medics believe me to be honest, but re the coconut oil, I have a friend who has just told me she uses it both externally and internally so I certainly will try some and thanks very much for the tip, best wishes, Fiona

Any kind of coconut oil? I suffer from IBS and I hate the bloating gasy feeling.. It hurts up under my breast in my ribs too. Is that normal?

Hi Tonya & Fiona, I'm new on here so I don't know if I'm allowed to mention this but I have found the best (and cheapest) place is the Coconut Oil Company. I placed an order last night for another 12 tubs as it's certainly cheaper to buy multiples. Now for the actual question. I purchase the the Virgin Coconut Oil. I have only just started using it but I was pleased with my results. It certainly gave me more "get up and go" and my pains certainly subsided. Of course there are other things as well & my apologies if I'm distracting anyone from the other IBS discussions on here. I'm sure that just one thing can't be the answer and last night I tried something completely new and again had great results. I have stopped eating bananas this week & pain subsided so decided to probe a bit deeper. I think I might have a cold coming on & I swear that eating garlic, onions etc it will stay away. However, eating bread, onions, I know I'm in for monster pain so after I ate cheese & onion rolls last night I ate some crystalised ginger and a drink I found that is pressed apple & ginger, nothing added i.e. sugar. Not only did my pains ease but have gone this morning. This may be part of the cycle of my IBS as it does come and go but I feel great this morning. Back to Coconut Oil though, my Wife takes it on a spoon as well as in coffee but it's too much for me to take it by the spoon. We have one of these little electric devices called a bullet which blitzes everything and this is what we use. You can't stir the oil in properly with a spoon as the coffee wll taste greasy but the bullet makes delicious creamy coffee. In the bullet mixing cup I put; 1 teaspoon coffee, 1 tablespoon coconut oil, normal amount of milk, fill with hot water and then blitz. I'm so glad I came across this site because I was so worried that I had something terribly wrong with me and my Doctor wasn't taking me seriously. I get terrible pains in my stomach (especially left side) and right across my lower back. Trying different things and walking 2-3 miles a night is helping. What doesn't help is too much so called "healthy eating". Best wishes and bright blessings to anyone picking up on these posts, special blessings to Fiona & Tonya for joining the conversation. Steve
