coconut oil for irritable bowel

Posted , 7 users are following.

It is with great disappointment that I have to report that I have tried coconut oil, a teaspoon in my coffees for two days and find today I am straining I can say without exaggeration five times more than usual, things are getting more 'trapped' and I am going even more often, so I won't be trying it again, however don't let my opinion colour you, do try it, we are all different, after all, Fiona

what was the story behind using coconut oil?

Someone on the forum found it helped them and my symptoms are so bad I'll try anything - once!!

Hi Fiona, you may find a course of colonic irrigation will help you... I'm sending you a PM link.

I should have explained, I have a prolapsed bowel which I had almost completely futile surgery for and still open my mucus riddled bowels 16 - 22 times a day so thanks but colonic irrigation would undoubtedly make matters worse as I am already distressingly frequent

This seems to suggest that coconut oil is very high in saturated fat  http://tvnz.co.nz/national-news/coconut-oil-health-claims-do-not-stack-up-consumer-watchdog-6228379

      Hi John,

Your correct re saturated fat and Mz Chetwin is  incorrect (full of it)

Although we don't know if Fiona took Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) or refined?

Mz Chetwin should have consulted with NZ Nutritional experts beforehand.

An Open-Label Pilot Study to Assess the Efficacy and Safety of Virgin Coconut Oil in Reducing Visceral Adiposity

      or

Effects of dietary coconut oil on the biochemical and anthropometric profiles of women presenting abdominal obesity.

      or

Antimicrobial effects of virgin coconut oil and its medium-chain fatty acids on Clostridium difficle. 11 School of Biomedical Sciences, Kent State University , Kent, Ohio, USA .

There are literally hundreds ofworold wide  scientific studies of VCO.

Mz Chetwin reminds me of the wife while looking at the rain outside her kitchen window, hears theTv weatherman announcing it was “clear and sunny” in her area…her husband from the bathroom shower shouting…”whats the weather look like now?”…she replies“its clear and sunny”   Claudio

There seems to be evidence that coconut oil is very high in saturated fat which would probably irritate your colon

Thanks Jon, I imagine that's what's happened, oh well, I'll keep trying stuff, Fiona

Jon yes it is high unsaturated fat but similar to the good stuff in avocados. It is a darn goid anti biotic and you CAN lose weight using it daily. Wonderful stuff!

I don'tknow if this is any help. Before I was diagnosed with gallstones one GP thought I might have IBS so the symptoms are obviously simiilar.

I am now on a low or no fat diet. I have a diet sheet and coconut is high in fat content so an absolute no no for me.

In addition, I'd just like to say I have been drinking lots of peppermint tea just now in order to attempt to reverse the effects and its proving very beneficial, although doesn't always work for me, can I recommend the Tetley pyramid shaped bags on a string as they are by far the strongest I've tried and being on a string easy to leave in the cup for even more added strength, and of course Tetley also do pyramid shaped ginger tea bags if you find these better for you, I've been in agony all day but beginning to feel better again for the tea.

Ooops!!  Just a minor error in case anyone wanted to buy them, they are actually PG Tips pyramid tea bags and not Tetley, sorry everyone!!

Hi Fiona, I certainly put a comment in one of these forums about coconut oil. I use it every day and it helps me big time. As I said at the time not all things are good for everyone. I eat things that others can't & vice versa. There are mixed views about coconut oil and you need to read all of it not just the positives nor just the negatives. It doesn't work for you so don't take it. I find Buscopan a waste of space but others swear by them.
