codiene addictions

Hi

Been on codeine from 18 years old due to chronic pain from hip condition now at 26 years old I've been trying for a year to remove them from my life. Doctor cut me off as the codine addiction is a family plague so went straight to chemist bought solpadiene 20-30 a day ish. Now after blood test showing changes in liver I attempted to take it easy 10 a day as not much help from doctor tbh. Last Sunday took 30 over prolonged work shift so staggered over dose admitted into hospital for 2 days with no ill effects . Now on 3 30 mg dihydricodiene a day and propanadol twice 40mg for stress this has been a week and I feel awful I genuinely couldn't care if I was here or not. 3 weeks wait for drug abuse help in my area as the needle addicts getting priorty. Manage to hold a job down and run h9use with two kids. Is depres sion a side effect of these come downs as I really don't feel like I can do this anymore. My kids are only thung that stops me doing any more codiene and constant control from partner of cash supervision and drug control. Any advice to speed this up or help ?? X

    Hi Nicola,

Totally empathise with you. Yeah you can feel depressed without the 'high' from the codeine. I found antidepressants really good to help with the withdrawal though they do take around a fortnight to kick in. I would ask the doctor for a short course of them to get through it. I was ok after about a fortnight of codeine free and will taper off the anti-depressants over a month or so. Hope this helps Nic.

Have a manic depressive sister who has never felt side effects apart drowsiness and dry mouth. Think due to fact what they are prescribed for some people will go downhill as it's trial and error with mental health meds x

When are doctors going to realise just how many problems are caused by the constant prescribing of codeine? I have rheumatoid arthritis and get codeine on repeat prescription but I dread the day they decide to stop prescribing it. Nicola you don't realise it yet but you have made the first important step to stopping the drug. That's more than a lot of people. Wait until your usual doctor gets back from holiday. It's probably the only way you're going to make progress.

No nicola it's not easy and unfortunately it's the paracetamol that causes problems with the liver.

Hi Nicola, the feeling of depression is a big part of kicking codeine i was taking both slpodol and tramadol for years - quit them both last september- you should start to feel a little better day by day- try and remember that it will get better and that the deppression will pass as well- they have dropped your codiene very low, if they are trying to taper you off !! you are right about doctors very few of them konow jack s..t about addiction and withdrawl's - your initial perscription should not have been cancelled without something to replace the codeine its crazy- anyway thats not going to help you now- you should be close to the end of withdrawls at this stage, if you are still in trouble in a couple of days ask your doc(even the idiot locum, ) for something like librium or valium- ask him for a daily script if he is afraid of you overdosing, even he must see how that cannot be a danger to you- maybe even get your husband to fill the prescription and give them to you, you want to get about 4 or 5 days - dropping each day- i have done this several times when i have been de-toxed from both alcohol and drugs- all the best Nicola, i hope this may be of some use- the depression will pass - stay strong

My partner was at consult with me when I asked and he explained he would have control of the drug in his own personal safe (don't ask rough bloc of flats)so I would not have control or able to and frankly if I wanted to kill myself I could go to any asda and buy enough tablets .... my partner is amazing he is clueless with it all as he only found out full extent at hospital but has the attitude of he doesn't need to say I'm stupid I know it already. Im sorry to hear that Nicola, i dont know what else to suggest, unless you try a different doc- i dont know if that is possible- idealy you need to see somebody in an addiction clinic- i dont know if they have community clinics where you live- perhaps ask the citizens advice they are normally well clued in to local services-i wish you the best of luck, i wish i could give you a better answer
