Coeliac Biopsy

Posted , 2 users are following.

I went to the Drs 2 weeks ago for blood test results and she said I have Celiac disease, and to stop eating some Gluten.

after doing some reading I went back and said "should I not be having a biopsy? (and still eating. Gluten until I have it)

so they said they would refer me to the hospital.

Ive just got an appointment through ... For Mid-march but it had hardly any details ... It just says Clinic: Gastoenterology Medical -NOT Direct Access Edoscopy"

which makes me think it's not for a Biopsy?

Has any one had this?

thanks

No, it was made quite clear what would happen.   Yours could be to see a consultant first. If I was in your shoes, I would ring up the hospital department that you have the appointment with and ask them directly to see if it's an appointment for a consultantation or for an endoscopy/biopsy. They usually give you specific instructions about not eating beforehand etc. if it is for an endoscopy.

You should definitely phone them up. If you have stopped eating gluten the biopsy may not work.

However it may be that your GP is of the opinion the biopsy is not necessary after a positive blood test, as all it does is confirm the result of the blood test.

Whichever is true you need to phone and make sure, because if they are going to do a biopsy you should continue eating gluten.

You should get continuing care including prescriptions for gluten free bread and flour etc., and a dietician appointment to help with the diet.

gilimm even if you have a positive blood test, you still need to get a biopsy for official diagnosis and for it to be recognised by NHS and coeliac uk. Victoria04174 please ring  up the department you have got your letter from as, if at a later date you need to start eating gluten in order to have a biopsy and you have already eliminated it from your diet, the symptoms will not be peasant.

thank you everyone for the replies x

i called them today and it is indeed just an appointment with a consultant, who will then decide what the next step is ...I.e. biopsy or not.

apparently the way it works now (well with this hospital) is that the referral letter from the Dr goes to a general "booking team" who just book an appointment, but it then goes to the consultant who will give it higher priority, and a sooner appointment if he feels that's what needed.

so I've just got to wait and see if I get a letter with an earlier appointment or not.

until then I have to keep eating gluten.

Had a call from the hospital this morning, and I'm having a endoscopy on Saturday!

freaking out, but I guess I only have 2 days to worry now rather than months x

It will be over with before you know it. As you say, it's better to get it over with sooner rather than later.
