Coeliac + tiredness

Posted , 6 users are following.

For the past year now I have been feeling very tired on and off. I feel tired, exhausted, can't concentrate etc..

I eat well, sleep well and exercise!

I have been to the doctors a few time and got blood tests.

My ferritin levels (iron) was low. I take iron tablets daily which did help for a little while.

I also get hungry really easily! I'm only of these people who needs to eat little and very often which isn't always easy to do!!

Is it normal for someone with coeliac dieseae to get tired and loose energy easily? Does anyone else experience this?

Thanks!

Are you saying that you have coeliac disease and have these problems or that you have all these problems and are wondering if you do have coeliac disease ?

Oooh sorry! Forgot to mention that didn't I!

Yes I have coeliac disease! I've known for about 6 years now and follow a strict gluten free diet!

I'm not sure if my tiredness is linked to coeliac?

Ok. sorry then, I'm afraid I am not much use to you. I felt like that for a long time before I was diagnosed but was ok after a while once I went GF. I have been using this forum for quite a while thought and have been surprised how different all our reactions and symptoms are. I hope someone can throw light on it for you. I think most coeliacs know more than doctors who just go by the book. Good luck with it.

Hi, Becky. I have a coeliac disease for almost 3 years.

I also feel very tired since being on a gluten free diet.

I also have gained 3 stones since then.

I think that it is actualy the bad carbohydrates which makes people tired, bloated and gain weight.

It is very difficult to eat just good carbohydrates, protein and diary products.

Iron suplements are also a help.

Plus, I am not wondering that I am always tired and having Coeliac disease and having the most energetic 4 year old girl.

So, what if you tried to eliminate bad carbohydrates? all the corn, potatoes, white rice flour and starch makes people tired.

HI, I've been GF for nearly a year.  Spent most of last year asleep - napping after work, sleeping lots at the weekend - which is what prompted the blood tests that found the CD.  Had it confirmed by biopsy.  Being GF means I am no longer falling asleep so much, but I am still chronically tired and have no energy to do very much of anything except go to work. I wake up in the morning with barely enough energy to get out of bed.  I just read something online that says studies in the US have shown the guts of many adults never fully recover, so even though you've been GF for 6 years maybe the gut damage is still playing a part in making you tired. I do wonder if my exhaustion is something else, as I originally went to the GP thinking I had ME, as I didn't have the classic CD symptoms and had so many symptoms associated with ME.  But of course when they found the CD that was the end of the story as there is no test to confirm ME.  I know this won't help you much, but you are definitely not alone.

I know this is super old but maybe you should look into other food intolerances like dairy or soy!

Coeliacs become deficient in vitamins and minerals. My husband used to be so tired all the time due to not getting PROPER sleep. He would have 10 hours sleep and also an after lunch nap. But he had sleep apnoea and restless legs. Someone suggested to try taking calcium. It 'cured' the sleep apnoea. (He also uses paper tape on his mouth at night time to make sure he breathes through his nose.. even when he has a cold it still works!) He takes magnesium tablets which cures the restless legs. He gets proper sleep and has his energy back.    It's worth a try!
