Coffee and Crutches

I believe I have solved the age old problem of how to carry a hot drink safely when using crutches and want to share this knowledge.  The solution consists of two products.  I have no involvement what so ever with either product - manufacturers or sellers.  I just want to help you solve the problem.

The first thing is a cup holder designed for babies buggies, but it will attach to any tubular stucture.  It is made by Brica.  You will want to search carefully as I found it at very different prices on different sites.  It should be noted that the cup holder comes with a warning that it should not be used for hot drinks.  This is where the second product comes in.

It is a spill proof travel mug made by Contigo.  The seal is so good that, provided you put the top on properly, you can turn the mug upside down when the mug is full and not a drop will come out smile.  The 470ml size fits the cup holder perfectly.

This site won't let me post links, but if you want the links that I used to purchase these products, Google Barhi Welsh Springer Spaniels and there is a link on the left hand side to my Hip Tips site.  The page is in the pre op section under the title of "Coffee (carrying when using crutches)".

I used my walker alot and sometimes even now, 13 months post op, I sometimes must use the walker.  I do not know what you might call a walker in the UK, but it has wheels and glides along while I push it with both hands rested on it.  I purchased a basket for the walker that allows me to transport a drink and anything else I want to put in it.  But unless the drink is totally sealed, the motion will spill it.  I want a cup that seals tightly and will not break if it falls to the floor.

The only thing that I can suggest is a thermos cup as they come with a screw top lid.

This is what I do, but I tie some string round it, long enough so I can create an handle. I will be doing the same again after next week as I will be on crutches again.

    Hope this helps you.

I was giving a trolley by the occupational therapist after my THR

Trolley goes in a corner off the room, if you want coffee or someone comes in and you want to do it, Crutches, over to ttrolley, prop crutches up, push trolley into kitchen , make coffee or a meal and wheel it back in butting the meal on the table, over to the crutches park the trolley and take the crutches again....sounds long and complicated but its not especially for that 6 weeks

Now I'm on crutches permanently I might have a look at your links, every little thing helps

I used to carry a flask,iPad etc in a small shoulder bag.

and had a plastic clip like for fixing stuff to bike handlebars that clamped onto the crutch, with a similar attachment on it's other side where you could clip one of those grabber things..hard to explain really, you'd need to see one to get it.

      Hi

I havent managed to find a way of carrying a drink but what i do have

Is a small pouch with a little pocket on the front as well as the the main bit.  Like you say unless you see it its hard to describe

I go to our large shopping centre a lot. { not for groceries}biggrin

I have 2 crutches and a small back pack but thats hard......your mobile is in your back pack ....if it rings, stop find somewhere to prop the crutches, take the back pack off look for the mobile phone etc and by the time you have done that it has stopped.eek

I found this little pouch when I was having a clear out one time ....I thinkj I bought it originally for the gym, to hook onto my my belt and carry some money etc in it.

Now I have a cable tie on my crutch {above the handle} and this hooks on to it. Doesnt look very big but inside ....can get loads of things in it

The main pouch holds my mobile phone, loads of cards, {one cash card, Boots chemist card, Superdrug card, lots of coffee cards eg Starbucks, Costa etc} Some arthritis care cards that I hand out.

In the front bit,  my sweetex/sweetners, tissues, and some otc tablets.

That is great.....still have my back pack but dont need to go in to it as often, these things are just to hand.

Still havent managed to find somewhere to carry a drinkbiggrin
