Coffee - Bone Loss Joint pains

Ladies, I had a DEXA scan today. I just discovered I have osteopenia. This is the state before osteoporosis! I was very shocked. I am runner, i lift weights, very active and outdoor. Have checked my vitamin and calcium levels in the past and they were normal. Yet here I am one year into Menopause and in this state! The doctor feels it may be due to my addiction to coffee. Several cups a day. She says after menopause we lose bone anyway and coffee leaches calcium from bones. Moral of story go easy on Coffee. anyone here have osteoporosis? what medication do you take?

I'm thinking it's the caffeine in the coffee

Well, apparently like all things, it's a individual issue. I was 5 years past meno when I had my first DEXA scam. And I drink coffee 7 days a week, at minimum half a pot.
My scan was more than ok, it was like a woman still having periods. So yes, I'm sure coffee may effect some women, just not all of us.

My doc did say it may or may not be the coffee but since i don't smoke, no alcohol and watch my food etc this seems to be the only odd thing that could have caused it, combined with hereditary. I am also very small boned. I am 5ft 3 inches and weigh 53 kgs. I can still wear my high school skirts and fit into them! I do drink seven to eight cups a day. Black with sugar and no milk.

thanks for sharing this. i have heard about the coffee before. i just think genetics plays a huge role. My experience in the medical field has shown me this over and over again. People that cant possibly take better care of themselves having heart attacks., etc

OMGosh Really? Coffee- jeez.. I'm surprised too with you being current in vitamins and exercise. That is scary-- didn't think coffee was that bad. I wonder if organic coffee is any better. Thanks for letting us know!!

I have osteoporosis in my spine and osteopenia in my hip. I'm 52, 5'1"" and 111 lbs. I hardly ever have caffeine. Based on my research, the lack of estrogen dramatically affects bone loss in some women and I happen to be one unfortunately. I just started bio-identical hrt for this reason and to help manage the multitude of other awful symptoms. Fingers crossed it helps with both.
