Cold sores/shingles/facial nerve pain/back pain

I never had chicken pox as a child. I had what doctors diagnosed as chicken pox when I was 15. The symptoms when I was 15- blisters on my right eye, my nose, and my left side of chin. The blisters on my eye caused my eye to swell shut. Since then I have been getting "cold sores" in those areas at least twice a year. I am now 39. I have only had one on my eye one other time. The last few years when I get the sores on my chin - I will get severe back pain days before the area starts to tingle. Then the sore appears and nerve pain comes with it. My pain surrounds my right eye, makes my teeth hurt, my jaw hurts, and my glands under my chin and by my ears swell and are tender to the touch. I am exhausted and have chills. I am currently having another outbreak, but it way worse than it has ever been. The nerve pain surrounding my right eye is awful. The pain circles my right eye and also makes my eye feel swollen. My jaw feels tight and aches. My eyes feel like they have a small amount of sand in them. I had severe back pain a week before the tingling. The tingling started on Sunday night. The sore on my chin/lower lip was red on Monday morning and the nerve pain around my right eye was there. The blisters appeared about two hours later. The spot is about as big as a quarter. I left work early because the face pain was so uncomfortable. The pain in my face makes it so I can barely feel the huge sore on my face. I went to the doctor yesterday because this felt different than I am used to. The doctor did not think it was shingles and said it was just cold sores. The doctor prescribed me valtrex. I took two after the doctors appointment and two before bed last night. Its Tuesday and the face pain remains, there are more blisters, and my back hurts. How is it that cold sores could cause so much discomfort that I don't go to work and I can't wear contacts because my eyes hurt. These things are getting worse as I get older and I can't deal with the fact that a simple cold sore is what is causing all of this. I called the family doctor and told them this is awful I need to figure out what is going on, so they are getting me an appointment with a dermatologist today. Please give me any guidance so that I can go down the right road.
