Hi there, I too have both diverticular and ulcerative colitis.  I can understand what you mean. I take asacol eight times a day, and go into hospital every six weeks for a drug  which us induced intravenously. I also take methotrexate for inflamed joints which is a well documented aside to colitis. My advice would be to go to your gp and ask fir a referral to a gastro doctor . When I was first diagnosed I was dosed up with steroids, not a good experience I can tell you but they helped for a little while . Don't suffer in

silence, there is help out there

Hi Stan.  How I sympathise.  To have suffered diverticular disease for 30 years is bad enough but to have that and ulcerative colitis MUST be unbearable.

Tidyqueen (as a simlar fellow suffer) has probably given you the best advice you are going to get on this forum and I think you would be well advised  to take it. Methotrexate is a drug also used iin the treatment of cancer and therefore needs to be monitored. If you do need to take this drug, your Consultant specialist will advise.  GP's, I have found can be quite dismissive of diverticular disease but do ask for a refrral (I'm astounded that you haven't been and tkae Tidyqueens advice (it's the best you are going to get on this forum) and seek hat help.

    Good luck!

Hi, thanks jonnojohn and tidy queen, I was admitted to hospital last year and was put on steroids and antibiotics, which helped a little but have had frequent visits to doctors and told to go on low fibre diet ( which I have for the last 6 months) but not helped. I have had another course of antibiotics which did not help and the last doctors visit last week he put me on codiene! After visiting specialist yesterday she took me off them immediately and has now given me-nortriptyline. They say my only other option would be a colostomy bag! Which I really do not want. I do have diabeties and am on warfarin so maybe this is why I can only take certain drugs. Anyway thanks again to both of you and let's hope this tablet works even one week out of four not to suffer would be fabulous. X
