Colonoscopy

In Jan 2016 when I went to the toilet I noticed I had blood in my stool and I went to the doctors who said it was probably just a tear. Feeling relived I hoped it would go away however every time I went to the toilet there was always blood. Then I had constipation and felt like I never needed to go so back to the doctors and they gave me laxatives. These didn't really work and when they did I had a upset stomach. I began feeling unwell and had pain stomach pains and went back to the doctor who eventually arranged a colonoscopy. I was terrified, during the procedure they found a polyp in my rectum that was sent away and came back it was not cancerous. They advised me that the problems I had should now go away. A year on and I still cannot go to the toilet I don't go for a week and then i end up taking laxatives which make me feel ill. I have gone back back to the doctors and they said there's no more that had be done and could be ibs. I'm struggling and feeling ill, I've had bad stomach pains and never go to the toilet only if I take laxatives. Anyone know why this could be? I'm worrying a lot and during the colonscopy they didn't enter both the small and large intenstine (only one) can't remember which one

Hallo hollie73419
Your problems could all be down to your diet-try eating sweet potatoes -bananas-dates-black grapes(the skins are fibrous) not too much red meat-more chicken and fish-cauliflower or broc /sweetcorn etc.
Regarding laxatives the best one for me (I had bowel cancer surgery 2 yrs ago) is Laxido was recommended to me-) It does work the next morning,-perhaps you could get your doctor to prescribe it.
Drink plenty of water- when you take it- I drink loads -system needs flushing out maybe that is why you are sluggish.
As you say you may have IBS-stomach pains can also be caused by anxiety stress and wind-(I know I am quite an anxious person)-
At least you know that you haven't got cancer-
I am not an expert (or a professional) but try to help if I can.
Regards
Susan

Hi Susan
Many thanks for your reply, i have tried everything I can in regards to diet. I eat plenty of fibre and drink lots of work and nothing seems to help. I don't want to reply on laxatives for the rest of my life, I've heard they are not good for your body to always take them and your bowel can become dependent on them. If I had ibs would it not have showed up on the colonoscopy?
Thank you

Hi Hollie
All I can say is that perhaps you need to seek advice from a different GP ?I Do you live in UK ?
Say you are not satisfied with your diagnosis -
Ask for a blood test-that might show anything different to what it should be normally.
Ask questions when in doubt.
I really don't know what else to advise you.
Best wishes
Susan

Like others, i would also recommend either a change of GP, or request a referral to a Gastroenterologist. Thankfully, you know it's not cancer, but equally there is some sort of problem, for which you need a proper diagnosis. i would not be happy to accept what the GP has said. You need clarification, so you can get any medication needed, or dietary advice if that is a suitable solution.
As for the constipation, have you tried either the Pro-biotic drinks, or yogurt?
I have a colostomy, and if I ever think that things are getting backed up, either eating a couple of yogurts- my favourite is the Black Cherry Muller Corner,- or one of the various Pro Biotic drinks, works like a charm every time.
In fact, so much so, i was giving myself diarrhoea when I first came out of hospital after my surgery. In an attempt to improve my immune system and general health, i was having a Pro biotic every morning.
I tried to work out why I had diarrhorea as I hadn't had the problem when my Colostomy was temporary, only after my Bowel surgery, and the conversion to permanent. Kept trying to figure it out, till one morning, opening the fridge door, I realised I'd been having a Probiotic every morning since I came out of hospital. Problem solved, as soon as I stopped having them.

Hi Hollie,
Are you still having blood or just the constipation and stomach pains? You mentioned that they didn't examine your entire colon? That leads me to think you just had a flexible sigmoidoscopy. I had a flexible sigmoidoscopy and they found hemmroids, but I still had symptoms so when I got my referral to my gastroenterologist he immediately scheduled me for a colonoscopy where they found one polyp. But he took his time and looked at every inch of my colon. I think you need a referral to a gastroenterologist and a full colonoscopy. Keep us updated!

Many thanks for your reply, I had a colonoscopy but the report says they didn't enter the small intestine. Sometimes there's blood not always but lately I've noticed a lot of mucus. After they removed your polyp did your symptoms stop? Mine haven't

Yes mind stopped right away. I'm just thinking if they didn't examine your whole colon, there could have been a polyp that was missed? Just thinking of solutions for you. May be worth bringing up. Regardless, you need a referral to a gastroenterologist.

You don't say which Laxative you take, I get LAXIDO on prescription from the doctor.
its a power in a sachet, take one sachet every morning or night, it takes about a week to get regular i.e going to the loo daily, but it does work and no pain. I have have 3/4 of my bowel removed due to cancer, so I only need half a sachet every couple of days,to keep me regular. good luck.

Hi Hollie I am with you if it's been a year and you are still in pain and passing blood it is time for a new doctor to take a look at you if this one is not helping. That's my opinion. Can you make an appointment with a specialist or get a referral to one? Please get back to us as we really do care. Diane
