Colonoscopy perspective

I had my Colonoscopy procedure about 4 weeks ago. I also posted my experience after it, I've since continued to read about other peoples experiences and felt the need to write this.

Without writing all over again what my particular experience was, I will summarise by saying that overall it was good. Yes there was some pain during it , i would say no more than 10 seconds if at all that. I had the sedative and the oxygen mask. I wasn't questioned as to whether or not I wanted it it was just what i was given. What I wanted to say in this post is that everyone is going to have a different experience , we are for one are not all having it done at the same hospital neither are we having it being performed by the same doctor. Before I had my procedure I read through many peoples experiences, but made a point of trying not to read many of those who reported feeling excruciating pain. Not to downplay their experience but rather to stay positive and in a good frame of mind. I've read posts of people questioning , "how can such and such a person say there was no pain??? " The bottom line is that we are all going to have different experiences, some will have no pain , some little , some more and so forth, however the absolute best way to approach the procedure is with a positive attitude. Focus on what you'll do the day after the procedure , focus on the food you'll treat yourself to as you've haven't eaten for at least the last 12 hours, focus on the nice nap you'll have when the sedative kicks in. Focus on laughing at the thought that you couldn't get through this.

What was my outcome , well the doctors told me two weeks after that I had cancer of the colon, more commonly known as bowel cancer. However you know what I'm still going to remain as positive as ever , I'm not going to focus on cancer horror stories, my treatment starts this week God Willing , but i'm not going to focus on chemotherapy horror stories , yes I'm experiencing pain, but if this experience doesn't kill me it it will surely make me a whole lot stronger and that's what I'm looking forward to being a whole lot stronger because of it. Lets encourage each other , yes if you felt pain say so , but be smart and put it in context , let no-one lose any sleep and start having panic attacks because of one of our previous posts.

I'll leave you with a little story , I used to work at a telecommunications company and every now and then either the computer system would "go down" or the telephone lines wouldn't work. When this happened because of the company's dependency on both the aforementioned the staff would go into panic mode , running up and down the floor bumping into each other people shouting at each other looking for whom to blame , there was one employee who was the head of the comms department and during one of these mad panics , I sat on my chair and observed him , he sat on his chair calmly , at times walked over to heads of department and then calmly back to his seat calmly wrote on his notepad before calmly heading towards the communications room. Once it was all over I walked over to him and said that I couldn't help noticing how calm he was in the midst of all the panic. He looked up at me and smiled and then said "My friend panic and stress are a state of mind" I choose not to put my mind into that state.I put my mind in a state that best allows me to find the issue and follow through to resolution. Till today i'll never forget those few words.

You are starting with Chemo rather than surgery?

It's great that you are a very positive person and I'm sure most people wish they could be the same however as you stated everyone is different, every persons pain threshold is different and some have more twists and turns in the bowel. I was told that I may have an area of irritable bowel in the colon which could have caused the pain. I wish you well with your treatment x

I don't for one second think that people put their bad experiences on to scare people, I put mine on to tell people to ask for sedation rather than risk my horrendous experience! I also don't think pain threshold comes into it. I have had 4 babies with no drugs whatsoever,a large lump removed with just a local that didn't work at the edges, yet felt like I was being sawn in half! I think it would be a good idea to take the sedative just in case! I never go into anything thinking negatively nor do I purposely try to scare people.

I'm terribly sorry to hear the outcome of your procedure and will pray you overcome it, I'm sure you will because you have a good attitude about it and are a positive person and people like us more than "oh woe is me" people usually do, good luck and onward and upwards wink
