Colonoscopy scheduled

I'm 28 and have a colonoscopy scheduled for 3 months time and little nervous. My symptoms first started around October last year, where I noticed a change in my bowel habits , very low energy and pain and cramping in my stomach with bloating. After discussing this with the GP it was initially put down as stress as im in my final year of my degree and this was my exam period. I didn't think much after that until a few weeks later where I had very loose stools and cramping and pain.

I had blood tests and I was also tested for celiac disease which was negative. My blood did show I had very low iron but I am not anaemic and was given tablets. It also showed my antibody level was considerably higher than normal. This was reviewed several weeks later with repeated blood tests which came back showing my iron levels where still too low and had only increased slightly and now my iron stores where depleted which I was also given tablets for. My antibody level was still raised.

Two months later I had blood from my rectum for 2/3 days and I was examined for fissures and hemorroides which was negative and resulted in the Doctor referring me for a colonoscopy . He was surprised I hadn't been referred to a specialist prior to this.

I'm just wondering what could be going on and other peoples opinions if anyone can relate to any of this ?

    Hi ashley72

Is it possible you could get your doctor to make the colonoscopy urgent(3 months seems a long time to wait)?

Re refer yourself to whoever you saw regarding this test-see if there are any cancellations etc etc- if not just push for it to be done earlier.

I can't say anything else as I'm not a doctor-take care of yourself -let us know if you manage to get an earlier test.

    Sincere wishes

Thank you for the responce Susan. Unfortunately not my appointment as been booked since March time and this was the first available appointment and I did state this procedure must be done within 18 weeks but they said there is a back log and the managers are aware of this. Other than going back to my GP and complaining about my tiredness etc there isn't much I can do and doubt they will do much either x

I still think that you should pressurise whoever you need to as you are feeling unwell and need to be seen sooner rather than later.

I notice on letters I receive from hospital that it always says"inform your doc if you think your condition has worsened and that you need to be seen urgently-" Is there only one doc at your practice ? Can't you see another one who would 'hurry things along" ?

The waiting isn't doing you any good -is it ?The sooner you have the test the quicker you will know what is wrong.

(By the way I have had a colonoscopy -so I know what they are about).

I'm going to search for my letter and see if it says the same thing. I'm going to give it another week (only because I can't get time off work to attend the GP) and call to discuss things again.

I always see a different GP each visit and feel two pretty much didn't even acknowledge my raised antibody level and said they would only be concerned if my IgM was raised also (which it isn't) but another GP has spoken to someone at the hospital apparently and said my symptoms are due to my low iron and folate which doesn't make any sense (im a health professional and know inflammation in body cause you not to absorb any iron) and the last GP was very surprised so goodness knows.

But thank you for your replies. How was the procedure for you ? Did everything come back ok ?

      Thanks for your reply-

I did have a cancerous tumour in my bowel which was removed in 2015-

tumour was found during colonoscopy-I am fine now (I am a lady of nearly 72)-everything is okay I am being monitored for 5 years (have to have 5 clear years)-before my mind will be totally 'at rest'.

Good Luck with your test - hope all will be well.

I have the exact same symptoms as you, I'm 21. I have had them for about a year but as of 2 months ago started experiencing daily cramping. I was told it could be months before my colonoscopy so I actually decided to go private because now I'm really worried! Also have low iron stores but not yet anemic...

I've also been having acid reflux have you had that? Maybe you should think about going private, expensive but might be worth it

When Is your appointment if you are going private ? I honestly couldn't afford it just now .

Yes I have had some acid reflux also

Keep me posted on how you get on

I got an appointment within 3 weeks might even be sooner if there's a cancellation! My appointment is for mid June I'm so nervous not for the test just the results ..took me forever to get my doctor to take me seriously and still feel as though he thinks I'm crazy even though my iron is low and have bleeding and slightly elevated inflammation markers plus all my symptoms.

That's so frustrating sad hang in there!! I'm having a hard time even waiting for mine it's in 2 weeks. In a lot of pain lately in my lower abdomen

They keep changing, but almost always loose, my biggest complaint is this ache in my stomach though... have it everyday

It is a constant ache ? I do get pains in my stomach but I find it's more because I constantly feel like I have to pass stools and when I eventually do its loose and has an awful smell and feel like I could still pass stools
