Coming off 7.5mg mirtazapine

Posted , 4 users are following.

Hi Guys,

I am fearing coming off mirtzapine reading all the horror stories. I take 7.5mg at bedtime to help with my sleep. I have been on that for about 10 months.

I also take 37.5 X 3 venlaflaxine a day for depression.

Questions

  • how quick will I get side effects
  • will they not be so bad considering I take a low dose and I am staying on venlaflaxine
  • what side effects should I expect

thanks alot!!!!

    Hi Ciara

Everyone is different but my advice to you would be to only do a 10% reduction of the Mirt every 4 weeks - this is the standard recommendation by all those who have gone through tapers. Having been on a rollercoaster ride of tapering myself over the last 18 months I can say that going any quicker than that just really isn't worth it. Having said that there are people who manage to reduce at the rate the doctor's tell you, but from what I have witnessed they are quite lucky to be able to do so. I've tried many times to push it more than 10% a month and often had withdrawal and had to reinstate,

As for how quickly you'll experience side effects - again everyone is different but for me it would be two weeks after I made a drop. I often got caught out thinking I was fine because it took a while to hit.

Side effects differ for everyone but the usual ones are anxiety and insomnia. These are the two that make most people end up having to reinstate when they go too fast.

Unfortunately I don't think the dosage or the fact you're on Venlafaxine would make a difference. The brain gets used to a certain level of medication and when you take it away too much at a time, this is what causes the withdrawal effect.

The good news is that if you do a slow taper - 10% a month - the majority of people don't get any side effects from this. You could always start out doing 10% a month and if you're ok with it after a couple of months, try increasing to 15% and see how you get on. It's really a case of trial and error to see how your brain copes with it. Wishing you the best of luck xx

I think the dosage and intake of venlaflaxine is too high. You could experience side effects from it. Its good to have a general mental health drug, rather then take different pills. I wish you the best, and i think you should take less of the venlaflaxine.
