Coming off Methadone

This isn't a particularly useful story so apologies but I thought I'd share my brief fling with coming off Methadone.

So I've been on it for a year and a half after some addictions and depression. I wanted to stop so I cut back last week. Every day I dropped about 2mls. I got some slight withdrawals but nothing I couldn't manage. So I was down about 15%by yesterday.

However I saw my doctor today and he said coming off it was a bad idea. So I'm back to my full dose now.

I guess I'm wondering if anyone's been in the same boat? Has anyone come off it? When do you know you're ready? Are the withdrawals bad and what period in the coming off is worst?

I once was on a Methadone program. My Doctor said the same thing. My Mom an addiction Specialist challenged Him to keeping Me still addicted. I listened to Her and dropped it very fast!  The withdrawals weren't too bad! I lost weight, focused better and became a better Parent. Can't remember too much as it was at least 10 years ago! Sorry! Good luck. Sounds like You know what's best for You!

Forgot! Mom said They make money keeping You in Their Clinics. Yes! They did! Plus Your health will improve! Gabapentin withdrawal are much harder. Another bad drug!

Thanks for that reply. I don't think the withdrawal will be so bad if I do it gradually.

I should have said in my post that I am happy I was put on methadone. It saved my life. I know it's a pain but for me I would have gone on to kill myself. So I not trying to put anyone off if you need it. Just that it has a time and place.

    Hi Ted.

Well, very well done for trying my friend!!

Im gobsmacked at your Dr's reaction instead of congratulating you for doing so very well!!!

I was put on 115mils last year to get me off Oxycontin & I've now dropped it to 45mils per day officially but, im now on 40 & have been for a week.

My plan is to try to drop it by 5mils per week, i tried 10mils but i realised & was told it was way too much.

Im just gonna keep on dropping by 5mils per week & see how i go, if too much too quick I'll back off but im also determined to come off it.

Why did your Dr put you back on the full dose & what is that dose?

Why did he say it was a bad idea instead of praising you for how well you did??

I think you did great & if you did it once, you can do it again when you're ready too but, i know dropping too much too quick isnt great.

    Good luck Ted!!!

    Take care mate

Hi Ritchie. My doctor said that I wasn't stable for long enough. That I would need months of being OK before I could start to come off. I kindof agree now that it's over. I would hate to come off and then to relapse. That could be very very bad for me.

I'm on the same dose as you, 45mls. To be honesti barely noticed coming down by 5 or ten mls. When he said that it wasn't a bad idea then I just said ill go back up to 45. It seemed like the easiest thing to do. I had been having some stomach upset and for the sake of 5mls I thought it would make life easy.

I think you're very brave doing what you're f doing. 5 ml a week maybe ambitious. Maybe think about dropping 5 then staying at that for a week. My biggest fear the whole time was that I would take something to feel good again. If you go too fast that's a real danger. Plus what's another month given all the progress you have made.
