Coming off Sertraline...

Hi everyone. I've just joined the group.

I really want to come off my meds. I'm on 50mg but am a little worried about the side effects. Starting them was bad enough! Any tips or advice would be most welcome and it would be reassuring to talk to people who understand. Thank you for reading. ??

Im currently taken 100mg and i asked doctor to half my sertaline and half my propolol he sad he can only do one at a time due to its the rules/law so i picked proponolol as it made me (Fat) Gain 2 stone on my belly Urghh so im taken 40mg and all i done with my Sertaline is snap it in half its been 3 days since i last took either of them but i still take them every other day or every 3 days depending on how i feel that day at first like 4 weeks ago i still took them everyday my 40mg Proponlol and Sertaline snapped in half so my body didnt go into shock as i suffer with terrible anxiety and panic attacks so like anything if you take your time and slowly come down in a months time you also can go every other day to every 3 days to hopefully twice a week then once a week smile hope this helps as i remember taken the 50mg first before he moved me up to 100mg Sertraline and omg the 50's killed me what a horrible month it was :@ i think its takem them whats the hard part not taken them is fine lol

I am just coming off mine as well. I have been on 100mg for 18 months and have recently lowered to 75mg without any problems. I am going to do it very slow. I am now going to stay on 75 mg for 4 months then lower to 50mg for 4 months then 25 mg for 4 months then I will see how I feel as I don't know wether to go to 12.5 mg or take 25mg every other day. So I would recommend coming off very slowly so you don't feel any side effects. I wish you well and good luck x

The ONLY  tried, trusted and well researched way to come off sertraline safely and avoid the nasty and often protracted withdrawals is to follow the 10% tapering method. So you cut each dose by 10% for a month at a time.

i was on sert 50mg for 2.5 years, I tapered as above over 7 months, I avoided all the. W/D and have been completely off them now for 4 months, I am fine.

if you want more convincing search on this site for the thread 'sertraline withdrawal, does it go away', plenty of horror stories from people who have tried to fast track coming off them.

These are powerful mind altering drugs and should not be played around with, your nervous system and brain chemistry needs time to adjust to each cut to stabilise and replace the chemicals the drugs have been providing. If you do it too quickly or not consistently (I've by missing days) your body goes into shock, hence the horrible withdrawals that can last for months/years after stopping the drug, it is not just a matter of getting them out of your system.

    good luck x

      Hello Tezes,

Thank you for your reply. I have seen that a lot of people have come off this drug fairly quickly but as you've said, it can come with many unwelcome side effects.

I was on Citalipram a long time ago and I took, what seemed like forever to come off! It was worth it though. I didn't have horrible side effects.

I will be very careful and withdraw slowly.

I'm glad you're off and feeling good. It's good news and also reassuring to hear. 😊
