Coming off sertraline after 1 year

Hi,

I have been on 50mg of sertraline since august last year - this is my first week of tappering off and my GP has advised one 50mg tablet every other day. I feel horrendous dizzy, nausea and vivid dreams at night...is this normal or is it my body telling me im not ready to come off yet?

Thanks x

I think you need to do it more gradually. I'd try breaking a 50 in half every other day for a least 2-3 weeks, then maybe half a tablets everyday for a few weeks. gradually working down should give you less issues. good luck x

Hello, seems strange to take every other day as you want it to keep blood plasma concentration consistent as you taper. i would use a pill cutter and drop down to 37.5 for 4 weeks, them 25 for 4 weeks etc. Sertraline do come in 25mg tablets sp you could always ask GP to change pescription...good luck

HI yes serotonin has said every other day is not good, a locum dr advised me to increase this way once and knew in the back of mind it wasn't right so I checked with one of the GP's I work with and after he had finished rolling his eyes, he said a most definite no, unless you want to be all over the place. You have been giving your system some brain chemical altering drug, it is not going to be happy to not have it anymore 1 day and then having it the next, bit like a child and sweets here you can have them, no you can't, yes you can, that child (your body) is going to kick off. Take it nice and slow, reduce by 12.5 each time, you can do this by getting a pill cutter, stay there for 4 weeks each reduction until you have settled, do not worry if you have to stay at a dose for longer or even go back up, the longer you take the more chance there will be of not having side effects Or a relapse

Come off much more slowly and keep the dose level. I tried to come off Duloxetine by taking a lower dose every third day and it was awful. Come down in small increments and give yourself at least a month after each lowering of the dose. i came off 75mg in 25 mg reductions and I'd say the drops were too steep. At 50 mg, a drop of 25mg is halving your dose. If you are sensitive to the medication this will be too steep. Give yourself time. It took me five months to taper from 75mg to 0mg and another four months to acclimatise to not having any in my system. In retrospect it would have been better to take things more slowly and more gently. I did get tingling, dizziness and other physical symptoms but more challenging was anxiety and very low mood. I set myself a target and worked towards it taking one day at a time. Sometimes id have a good couple of weeks after dropping the dose but then symptoms would return. However, I gritted my teeth and got through it and I'm out of the other side after nearly a year of withdrawal. It's not all bad and you can do it, but be prepared to weather the storms if they come. Know you'll get there but take one day at a time. And do it slowly. My advice is go back up to daily 50mg and start again when you feel a bit better. It's a challenge but it's worth it. A bit like life really!

That is way too fast. There is a facebook page called Zoloft should be illegal. They have a tapering schedule which is excellent. I used it after i had been on zoloft for a year.

Very slow and you hsve to be patient but well worth it.

    No side effects or withdrawals.

    Good luck

    I'd taper far more slowly.

I was on 200mg and I went down to 175mg every other day for 2 months.

Then 150mg every other day and so on.

    Take it SLOW.
