Commencing gym workout

Posted , 10 users are following.

I am nearly 8 weeks post bilateral THR and thinking of joining a gym to gradually build up my fitness.

Any advice re safest things to start with and progression would be gratefully received. I have commenced v low resistance exercise bike and walking across uneven field with my dog.

    Hi jilly

You are doing amazingly well and ready to move forward with such enthusiasm. I love it.

With regards the gym if I were going (and if I venture into the one on holiday) I would do stationary bike and treadmill mainly for legs then I would do most of equipment for upper body I. E. pecs, lat pull down etc.

I don't think we should do same repetative movements for a long time.

Again like everything else, start slowly and see what your body is ok with and don't push your body too much at this stage that can come later

I was told stationary bike and walking on treadmill.  But only for 30 minutes at a time.  Also try to improve your balance.  Upper body exercises are fine.  I can’t remeber when the PT added things like the Pilates machines and leg press machine.

Thanks Staceymaz - treadmill and balance will be good to do.

      What is a pilates machine?

It is actually called a reformer.  The horizontal rack like machine you lay on and use different color springs to adjust the tension on a bar to do leg presses against.  I would recommend getting trained on how to adjust it and use it from an instructor before using it.  But basically a leg press machine.

Thanks Joe - i certainly will do. Was just interested in others experiences and what they found worked best for them as a starting point. ☺

Looking back at my blog, that's just when I started walking around uneven fields, with a 3.5 mile walk. I was already cleared by my physio to use my exercise bike at 4 weeks as I had been doing well with them in the physio class.  But I had only one hip done, not two like you, so you are doing fabulously well there.

My big problem came 2 weekslater when I had to undergo revision due to errors .... the legal case is still in the pipeline.

You need to build stamina, and muscle strength to help with dislocation prevention, so slowly increase the length or speed of the walks and increase the resistance of the exercise bike step by step.

    But please don't over-do it !

Hi Rocketman - thanks for your encouragement.

I certainly won't overdo it and your advice is understood - common sense us key i think.

Hope all progresses satisfactorily with your case - i imagine it is a long, drawn out process.

    Dear Jilly

I wonder what you hope to gain over walking and doing your exercises by joining a gym.

    Cheers Richard

      Dear Jilly

If you can then I think swimming will give you the best results generally.

      Cheers
