My experience my Ablation of Atrial Fibritation

I am suffering from AF since 20 month. The first time it appeared was in holidays, I was swimming for 30 minutes in chilly water, suffered probably a bit of hypothermia, had some coffee, a hot shower, some alcohol the days before, I was laying in bed and then my heart started to beat wildly and fast, and I was very scared. At that time I didn't know of the existence of chronical AF, so I continued drinking loads of coffee and working under a lot of pressure, and the symptoms appeared more frequently. After a year or so I went to the GP, then a specialist in the Royal Free Hospital, and ended up in the Heart Hospital, waiting for my ablation in a couple of days from now on.

I was very scared of the operation until a few day ago, when I came to this website, and read some post of others having undergone ablation. I am looking very much forward to do the procedure, as it is such a small amount of suffering compared to what I am suffering now.

AF is rising not only rising the risk of Stroke, but the Atrium enlarges with time, so it is damaging the heart slowly, but I heard this process can revert when it is caused by AF. Anyway it is really best to do the ablation as soon as possible. My symptoms start when I am tired and try to relax, lay down or sleep. And I can stop it by taking beta blockers and exercising: Just a few minutes of cycling will be enough to go to sinus again, and I will always try to stop it to avoid further enlargement of the atrium. Last night I went to bed at midnight, Af started, I got up cycling, it stopped immediately, I went to bed again, woke up at 3:30am with AF, went cycling to stop it. So I really prefer ablation to that kind of torture.

I would like to help people to take their fear from this operation and share my experience with them, that' why I am writing this. I want to keep others informed ablout ablation.

Hi, I was wondering if you had your ablation, and how you are feeling now. How long has it been since the ablation?

Hi there, not sure if you are still active, but I could really use advice! I am 32 year old women, and also just had catheter ablation. The procedure was 9 days ago, on day 6 I started getting severe palpitations. I have three small children to care for and am having an extremely hard time. I feel it every time I get up to do a chore or cook, and therefor have to sit or lay down (thank god for my husband). It's getting worse not better. Before the procedure I would only have symptoms every couple of months, now I fear that it's worse and I will never be normal again. Any info or advice would help. It's Sunday, tomorrow I plan on calling my cardiologist but at this point any advice is greatly appreciated! This is happening at least 15-20 times a day. I also get light headed. No pain just tachycardia and skipped beats.

I have to say I felt worse before I felt better and my surgery was success. I honestly would stay in close contact with your doctor to let him know what's going on but to also ease your mind. I would just take it easy doing light duty kinda of stuff I know that's a task w kids. I did end up back in the hospital after mine for an extra two days so I would say if your really feeling rough go to the er and let them check you out. Always be safe

I figured I'd throw my experience into the mix since the responses here helped me.

I have/had Wolff Parkinson's White. A littleness bee 2 months ago I had an episode of SVT that I couldn't stop on my own and my heart rate was at 260 for over an hour.

I had my ablation about a month ago and it seems to have worked. I went in at 8am and my surgery was about 9:30-10am. I had some acid reflux that morning and my heart rate was already elevated. Because of that, my surgeon said that they shouldn't have any trouble finding the extra circuits in my heart. Once in the room, my nurses said he gave the go ahead to give me the "good stuff". The thing I knew, I was still on the operating table but finished with the procedure, so I asleep as far as I could remember through the whole thing.

The recovery was far from pleasant. The first pain I can remember was pulling the sheaths. I almost cursed at the nurse because I felt she was so rough on pulling them out. I had severe back pain, and for about 2 full hours because of laying on my back so long. I was in or close to tears because they said I still couldn't move from my back for atleast 6 hour.

After a couple hours, my acid reflux was still there and I had an episode where I had the worst pain Ive ever experienced (this is isolated to me personally, so others shouldn't worry about this). Because of this, they finally have me really good pain killers and something to help me sleep. I slept for a few hours and was feeling a little better.

6 hours post surgery - my BP was low so they were giving me soda and crackers to try to raise it. Once it had raised a bit, they wanted to try to get me to walk and use the bathroom. Once in the bathroom, I sat down, and blood was everywhere from the pressure of me sitting on the toilet seat. They told me that blood may have pooled where the catheters were, but I don't know if they just said that to make me feel better - but they got the bleeding to stop. My BP dropped hard from seeing all that blood and I was so dizzy. It took another hour to recover after that.

Once my BP raised, they discharged me. I was sore for a good 5-7 days. Bruising was bad and wasn't completely healed for 3ish weeks.

I wouldn't say the experience was pleasant, but not having to worry about episodes of SVT anymore makes it worth it.

Hi guys just a question about the ablation because I had mine done 3 years ago. I get symtopms like my heart wants to go into a fib like it slows down my heart beat and stops then it goes back and forth then I'm back to normal? And I still have skip beats that feel like afib but they don't last long. Just curious if anyone feels like that?

Hi vitony, I am 24 and i get exactly the same thing. Although i havent had an ablation I was diagnosed with PAF last year, and have been on bisoprolol since. Do you get like thuds/thumps when they happen. Almost an indescriable feeling.?

I had the ablation a little over three weeks ago. I put it off for years because I was so scared and other reasons. Except for the part where a camera was put down my throat I never knew what happened..So far in rhythm but too early to tell if it will stay that way. I can only say you have to look at your individual situation. In my case the percentage of afib was increasing over time as indicated by ekg information and I finally decided to risk it. I suffered from a lot of anxiety for a long time before I made the decision. Professional help i\is possibly advised. Time will tell
