Throat swelling

Thyroid problem for many years. Over the past few weeks I have sensed that my throat has developed a swelling - feels like something is not quite right.  It maybe me and waiting for test results on Friday, but wondered if anyone else has developed the same symptom.

    Hello - this is quite a common symptom in Hashimotos sufferers. Often caused by stressful situations - the thyroid struggles to cope and in fact works too hard causing it to swell. I'm sure your GP will be able to explain all of this to you. Sometimes we can develop nodules on the thyroid which can produce the same symptoms.

      Thanks. I've had under and overactive thyroid problems for over 30 years - now 53.  I have heard of Hashimoto, my symptoms: weight gain, fatigue (falling alseep middday), dry skin, pale face, back pain, constipation, not sure about brittle/hair loss, definitely Irregular/heavy menstrual periods depression (a bit),  Does explain a few things and will ask my doctor about this when I get my test results this week.

      Result of blood test is that my thyroid is weakening, upped dose to 200 mcg and have low iron levels. Wondered why I was falling asleep at odd times of the day. Hopefully I will be able to function a lot better now. Will be tested again in 6 weeks.

    I had the same problem in my throat it turned out that I had a goitre I had lumps at both sides of my throat so they removed my thyroid gland my lumps was growning inwards it felt like I was chocking that went on for nearly 3 years

    I have been diagnosed with an underactive thyroid for many years! But when I was diagnose they also found a goitre which is situated in your throat over and displays as a lump that is rather uncomfortable! I have lived with this since I was 11 years old and I'm now 26! My gp keeps an eye on it to make sure it doesn't get larger but u can tell urself if it feels different!

    Best to ask Ur gp to check it over

    Sounds like you may have autoimmune thyroiditis, but won't know without test results.  Is there any pain in the neck area of the thyroid? How about chest pain? Any trouble swallowing or a sensation of fullness in the neck? Do you have an iodine deficiency? Sounds like your doctor is on the right track, the test results should show levels of thyroid autoantibodies in the blood. See if your doctor is willing to have a specialist perform a thyroid ultrasound. Thyroid problems can be quite extensive, and getting the right treatment can be tricky. Make sure you communicate with your doctor, that is so important.
