Travelling without being able to weight bare

Hi All

I am almost 4.5 weeks post op and I will be traveling on a a train to Ottawa, ON from an hour west of Toronto. The total trip is about 5 hours in length. I am leaving in 2 weeks so I'll be 6.5 weeks post op and am suppose to see my surgeon for my second follow up the morning I leave.

My questions are:

  1. Should I call and see if my surgeon can see me next week to discuss the travel?
  2. Should I suggest being moved from a fiberglass cast to an airboot to allow for swelling due to travel?

Any advice would be great!

There's no reason not to contact your doctor and just ask these questions. It's probably a good idea to try to see your doctor at least a couple of days before travel rather than the morning of. They're likely to take your cast off at that visit in order to get xrays and make sure incisions are good and such and then put you in another cast or an airboot. All that messing around with your ankle will be tiresome and might make you hurt some. I wouldn't want to travel the same day. Also, if they put you in an airboot, you might want a day or two to adjust.
