I'm having my THR end of this month. I'm in favour of spinal anesthetic+ sedative. Comments would be appreciated....

I had mine on 6th Dec and deliberated long and hard on the topic - changed my mind several times but eventually went for general anaesthetic because of the risk of hearing what was going on in the theatre.  However, I did not react very well to the drugs and if I had another one I'd go for the epidural.  Hope that helps.

Thanks for your prompt reply. I will request to be heavy sedated if they allow me as I have no wish to hear what will be going on in the theather.

Hi, I had a spinal with light sedation and it worked very well for me, no problems and no after effects.  I would not hesitate to repeat the procedure this way.  Good luck.

Thank you Lorraine.  We're you completely asleep or did you hear what was going on in the theather?

Well can honestly say having an epidural was amazing, was fully awake obviously alight sedative, but had earphones and listened to good old Frank Sinatra and some classical, heard all thedrilling etc...but did not worry me one jot, recovered so much more quickly and The Royal Bournemouth were wonderful every single member of staff, cannot speak highly enough.Isay you wont regret it M kind regards Sylvie

Thank you. I think I will ask for strong sedation as I am too coward to hear what is going on in the theather.

I had mine done in July with a spinal injection and sedation and although I was really scared I did not feel a thing, mind you I did not have a choice as I had had an accident in the home. Hope you get on well.x

I had my THR on 5 Nov with sedation and spinal.  I was totally out cold from when I went into theatre until I woke up in resus.  The great thing was that unlike previous operations when I had a GA, this time once I woke up, I was awake.  No spending the day going in and out of consciousness!  I would definitialy recommend sedation and spinal.

I had that did not feel anything or hear anything. Woke up after op feeling a lot better than having a general. Normally sick and off food. I was sitting up eating a curry a few hours later! Couldn't  face an epidural  though.

Thank you. Hope I will have the same experience as you because I do not want to hear anything of what is going on in the theather.

Hi I've had 2 THR's and both of them with a spinal and a light sedation

I can honestly say I didnt hear a thing

I felt much better afterwards compared to having a GA which takes much longer to come around from

Do you have a choice? I find most consultants have their favourite ways of doing it and unless there is some real reaswon why they shouldnt to it that way they go ahead.

Oops!!! my first reply did not go through for some reason.

I m having mine done at Guy's. My 1st pre op assessment is on Friday and I hope I will be offered the choice of the anestetic I would prefer.

The only anestetic I had was when I had my tooth taken out and I am not keen of the general anesthetic.

My decision was based purely from my research.
