Common triggers for pain?

My dad has been diagnosed with a small sliding hiatus hernia and has been prescribed 30mg lansoprazole x twice a day and 5-10ml gaviscon 4x a day as he suffers with pain on and off all day. I wondered if anyone has anything particularly triggers theirs? I've got him to start doing a food diary and to sit up properly in his chair when he's watching tv, but as yet we haven't found a trigger of sorts - it's just weird that its on and off all day and gets worse at pretty much bang on 8.30 every single evening regardless of what or how much he's to be eating. It's getting him down, bless him

Hi I also have a heitus hernia and I found that not eating anything at all after 8:00pm has helped me so much it's so hard to tell what will help and what won't everyone is different and this is something that can cause someone to feel down and depressed because it changes your life so much I take omeprazole once a day and zantac twice a day and these also help me so much maybe he can try taking these and see if they help him he can talk to his doctor and see if he can be put on these meds I wish your father good luck and I hope he feels better soon

    Thus is very curious

What is he doing at 8:30 each day when things get worse?

What is he doing the previous 3 hrs?

Is the pain heartburn? something else? or both?

Is the pain always the same during the day? or is it different at 8:30

Is it 8:30 AM or PM?

I agree, it's very odd. it's 8.30pm, when he has been home from work say 4hrs and had his tea probably a couple of hours earlier, so at that time he's usually sat watching tv. He says the pain is on and off pretty much all the time, but worse from the evening and he now says he's having to sleep pretty much sat up. He doesn't describe it as heartburn, in fact he struggles to describe it at all its just painful he says (But isn't heartburn painful?!) so I dunno. Will keep him on his food & symptom diary see if I can spot anything

    Hi there

Is it that maybe he has had a meal and is sitting at that time??

Has he tried eating very small portions and cutting out fats. I had a h hernia (now repaired) and found that small bland meals made a huge difference.

Be careful with ppi's as they have a host of side effects. I would snack on dry toast or a dry biscuit, or fruit.

My best wishes to him as this is very debilitating, poor man. Good luck.

hi its a complicated condition to have, i was diagnosed last jan with a 3cm hiatus hernia and gastritus and was given high strenght omeprazole , zantac and gaviscon .. Gastritus has gone now. ive stopped taking omeprazole as they were making me have awful side effects also they depleted all the acid in my stomach which can give heartburn too and my magnesium readings were too low.i take a high dose of probiotic and kefir and life yoghurt wich all keeps the gut healthy . No acidic foods or drinks very bland foods little and often . I dont often suffer from heartburn now which can be very painful. Gardening and pilates ive given up as the bending over upsets the hernia i get awful pains and heartburn . i sit up straight for about an hour and half after evening meal . And no slouching must sit upright. yes this herni has changed my life but im managing it ok now . If surgery was 100% reliablei would have it done .

I can relate too all of these, as I've just been diagnosed with hiatal hernia and gerd. It is a huge adjustment, and everyone is different. It's been bothering me now for a straight 3 months, and it can be very depressing and hard to deal with. I too sleep sitting up and I dont eat after 7pm. My pain is definitely worse at night, but its probably because that is when I am the most idle. I too have stopped with some of the medications, as I found they were taking away magnesium and vitamin B12. That's strictly my opinion on it, but I'd like to try and get better with as little medication as possible. It's taking some getting used to, but now I keep a food diary, and I have my bigger meals at breakfast and lunch, and keep dinner minimal with hot water or herbal tea. I dont drink alcohol, caffeine, or carbonated water. Like I said, we are all different. I'm going to see a naturopath and chiropractor, as I've heard from many people, that it helps. I'm also going to see a surgeon to see what they say. Im sad by the amount of people that suffer from this. It really is painful and depressing at times. It's been quite an adjustment, but hopefully it gets easier with time and diet. Thank you to all who have shared. I wish you all well in your journey!!

Well after yet another trip to the GP he's now on 2x30mg lansoprazole, 4x gaviscon, now ranitidine has been thrown in the mix to see if that does anything. He seems to have a couple of ok days followed by a couple of days where he's in agony, being sick at night and all sorts. I've had him complete a food diary and can't seem to spot any trigger, but these last couple of days he's felt that I'll he's almost become scared of eating so he's had cereal for breakfast followed by something light on toast - he's lost almost a stone since this all started & he's never been anywhere near overweight. The GP seemed to indicate that regardless of what he eats, with small but regular meals in addition to the meds he should improve but failing that he'll have to refer him on to a gasteoenterologist, which would take forever so I'm at a bit of a loss as to how to help him anymore in the mean time. fingers crossed the ranitidine works some form of magic
