48 years old active snowboarder, runner, tennis player.  complete avulsion BOTHrolleyes legs sprinting in a tennis game.  Just had left leg done because the retraction was 4 cm.  right leg at 2-3 cm.  I am doing great!!! Off pain meds as of day 3 after surgery.  Today is day 5 and I get to showersmile.  I am getting along on the crutches ok..they are not the fastest mode of transportation.  I am planning on getting the right leg done in a few months.  I can sit on toilet and am back to regular bowel movements...the pain meds really will mess with that.  PT starts Tuesday, am curious to see what they will have me do. I am trying to find out about what I can expect as far as walking as soon as possible.  Keeping up with a good attitude and so grateful to have modern medicine!!

hello. i had my 3 tendons torn - about 4/5 cm off. lots of conflicting medical advice.

I had the surgery which merely´pulls up the tendons do they scar at the right spot providing better support for the muscle and the entire leg. I am very happy I did it within the 3 weeks. lt is my strong leg as I have e some knee problems on the other leg and I am sure having the operation (@51) will also save le lots of issues later on in life. back to same level of sport as before.

this forum really helped me so I wanted to write. good luck

    Hi All

I too had complete avulsion of all 3 and 10 cm retraction. Misdiagnosed then told too late for surgery in Ireland. Has anyone had delayed surgery in UK or Finland and how was it. I am functional but experiencing numbness now in foot and leg and also altered Gait. Cant walk that far and I am 11 month post injury. Worried about the issues further down the line if i dont have surgery but thought of surgery at 12 months in is also scary as i already have nerve and numbness issues.

Any advice from anyone who has rehabbed successfully either way?

    Hello,

I had a fall from my skateboard which resulted in a hamstring avulsion ( i did a split). The moment I fell it was instant pain. I was unable to walk on my right leg because it was not cooperating & felt weak. I used the skateboard as a crutch to get to my car. This happened early afternoon. I didn't take any pain pills, I just iced it & used crutches. By the ending of the night I was able to go up & down the stairs with crutches and or a cane. When I sat down I could feel this uncomfortable lump on the backside of my thigh. I have a sit down job so I had to take a Tylenol for the discomfort/pain I was feeling. I was able to walk with a limp 2 days later. On the 6th day after I decided I should go see a physical therapist I had seen before. They took an MRI of my leg (This place has doctor's onsite for evaluations) they massaged the leg to help with the swelling & fluid in my leg from the fall. Then they did the cold therapy with stim treatment. (I continued to do therapy for the next 3 weeks.) The results from my MRI showed I that my hamstring was just under 2cm detached. They said surgery would be needed to reattach it & I need to see an orthopedic doctor to talk about options. The surgeon told me that this is a rare injury & usually happens in water skiing, skiing & soccer. They did an x-ray of my pelvic bone to make sure that no bone was attached to the retracted hamstring.

Oh I forgot to mention I had major bruising where the hamstring was once attached & also the back of my knee area where the hamstring is still connected. The bruising took about 4-5 days to appear.

The doctor said that he could do the surgery with a camera (Endoscopic method which I found a YouTube video to watch, cool stuff). So I was scheduled for therapy in 4 weeks. They said the best results happen if surgery is done 6-8 weeks after injury. I was still doing therapy 3 times a week. They massaged my leg & rubbed out all the knots. They said that the muscles in my leg were very tight. At the 3rd week mark I was able to walk like nothing was wrong with my leg. I was able to climb stairs again leading with my right leg. No weakness or anything. My right leg is strong & feels back to normal. The only thing is when you walk you do not realize your stride, so my right leg doesn't have the full stride that my left leg has. I assume that is because the hamstring is not attached. I do not know, it is hard to explain. I have not been in any pain since the second week after the injury. It has been now almost 10 weeks now.

The surgery got pushed back all the way to late October(12 weeks after injury) because I had a family emergency come up & the doctor said that did not want to do my surgery in an actual hospital with an overnight stay instead of a surgical center due to my sleep apnea. They said the surgery will be fine even though all this time has passed. I am unsure if I want to go through with it because I have read so much about how much pain I am going to be in after surgery & recovery is approximately 4-6 months or longer. I am prepared to do it. I bought my own cold therapy machine, the toilet seat riser, In-motion crutches, a grabber, power recliner & cleared space to make it easier to get around. I want to get back to bike riding & skateboarding (not the skateboard that did this to me but my longboard instead) I am just afraid of the pain because I haven't been in any real pain except the day that is happened. Sorry for the long-winded story. There just is not a lot of info on the internet about this type of injury & what to expect after surgery.

    66 year old male

I had the proximinal hamstring surgery with a complete tear avulsion on september 19 this year at Kaiser Panorama City

with a Ortho Sports Surgeon. This was due to a slip playing tennis in Costa Rica. The surgery was completed on Sept 20th, and went home that evening . When the injury to my hamstring occurred the pain with a popping sound was the worst I had ever felt in my life This caused me to Pass out.. and was in bed in costa rica for two days, and could not walk . The flight home was unbearable and the next day saw a doctor, was recomended to see specialist and after the MRI with the diagnoses, was

transferred to a Sports Ortho Surgeon. 3 day later was in surgery. (Just a Note I am a very active person play golf and tennis 4 times a week and walk 4 miles a day.)

    Post Surgery

Was advised to purchase a raised toilet seat with the cut out on the right side. (Check amazon) Was sent home with a Ice Machine 6 hours a day and I am Still using it . I am still wearing the brace which was placed on my leg in the OR. On Nov 1st I see surgeon and hoping the brace can be removed . I will however continue to use the crutches until dec 1st or there about.

    Pain after surgery

The pain was generally extreme for the first 17 days, and was located around my groin area and the sit bone where the anchors were placed . I am still numb around the crotch, and from the incision down to the back side of the leg ....

today Oct 18 the pain is not as severe but spasms on the back of my thigh occur about once every hour. It feels like an electrical shock.

I am on ibuprofen 800 and Norco 10, however Norco is now only taken when I have a extremely bad night. I sit in a recliner with a half pillow, and a pillow propped on my right side to avoid sitting on the right side of my butt. If anyone has questionsI will be happy to help
