Hi Jean, basically it is using what is sometimes called chichen feet.Basically you use your thumbs very firmly on one side of the knee with your fingers splayed on the other side. Then massage the fluid down towards the underneath of the knee where the lymph glands are able to drain away the fluid. I hope I have explained it correctly, I only do what I was taught to reduce the swelling that I had before the tkr, I was very pleased that it works post op. I use E 45 to massage but you should check with your specialist first as everyone is different.

jean -- in english, it is also called "manual lymphatic drainage".  our lymphatic system is responsible fo flushing out all kind of toxic material ... there is a highway of them in our body!  during operations these often get thrown off kilter and stop working effectively, meaning our extremities (mainly legs/feet) get very congested.  the swelling usually gets worse late afternoon / evening as the lymphatic system can no longer flush all the toxins through. having a massage really helps in bringing swelling down, i can highly recommend it.  i am also including a link to an explanation from wikipedia which confirms how effective it is after having broken bones (which in essense, is what we have, albeit on purpose!!) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manual_lymphatic_drainage..  i have also just found a page for the uk where you can find accredited therapists and even better explanation on what this is.  http://www.mlduk.org.uk/  ... happy reading!

That is really bad luck about the infection. As if the whole thing isn't bad enough.I'm 3 weeks tomorrow too and still find the nights worse as I can't lie comfortably at all. However, I have started to have a small glass of wine at night, and that seems to make it a lot better. Hope you improve soon.
