I've had hip replacement on each side and didn't ever have them (and I don't think I ever needed them) but my father had knee surgery and needed them.  I believe it's for people that don't have as good circulation.

In Canada, you have to buy them and they aren't cheap (they might have been about $80CND)

    Hope this helps,

I'm 2 weeks post LTHR and I only wore the thigh-high compression stockings in the hospital.  They took them off when I was ready to go home. A friend of mine had to wear them for 6 weeks -- but she has an underlying circulation problem.

There is usually some form of treatment to prevent DVT's. So most people have one of compression socks, anticoagulant injections or anticoagulant tablets. Some have a combination.

    Hi Jessica,

I am in UK. Lots of people have TED stockings. It is one of the things I was dreading. It so depends on where you are and your Surgeons recommendations.

To my relief I wore a compression stocking on my unopperated leg up to the knee only when I was in hospital.

I had anti coagulant injections for three days in hospital and I was sent home with a months supply of  Rivaroxoban to prevent blood clots. So far so good. And no compression stockings for which I am grateful.

That said I understand you should have at least one or the other.

Btw. I have terrible legs with varicose veins that were operated on 16 yrs ago. My Surgeon did not think I was at increased risk of blood clots.

    Hope that helps.

    Take care. X

    hi Jessica,

it depends on your surgeon, I think. .

I had 2 THR surgeries and no compression socks. ...

had to self-inject fragmin for 6 weeks and did foot pumps and ankle rotations to keep the circulation going

I understand that they (compression socks ) are evil contraptions and members burned them in a bonfire to celebrate their freedom. ..

    big warm hug

LOL about the 'evil contraptions' Renee.  My friend that was supposed to wear them for 6 weeks finally got rid of them at 4.5 weeks.  She was thrilled to get rid of them!!!  She lived alone and could do most everything but always had to have help getting them on and off.  I think she would wear one pair for 3 days and then someone would come over and take them off.  She would shower and then put on the spare pair.  I'm glad I haven't had to do that.   By the way, what does TED stand for?  Tension..........Elastic........I can't figure it out!

Wow.  I was nowhere near the TED definition!    I have worn the short ones on flights before.  I like the 'coach class syndrome'!

I was given them but must admit to not using them but having said that I make sure I do a lot of ankle pumps and elevate my legs. Also was on a blood thinner for 6 weeks. It is recommended.Surprised you did not get them

Hi Jessica  I'm surprised that you weren't issued with compression sock but it may depend on the hospital/surgeon.  As far as I'm aware, at the hospital I went to, ALL THRs were issued with compression socks and told to wear them for 6 weeks (oh the joy) and were also give blood thining injections to self administer once at home.

I just can't wait to be able to discard the bloody things though, they are so uncomfortable.

Perhaps you should check with your hospital whether or not you should have compression socks.

Hi Jessicaoxo.....I have read also about a lot of people who had to wear the "dreaded compression socks", and some of them for quite some time, but I was not told to wear them. The only thing I had to do was take the blood thinning injections daily after I came home...I am kind of curious also why some have to wear them and others don't....Wishing you a quick recovery.....Barb

Was told to wear them but they were not reapplied after the first time they came off..I think I will get some type of stocking to wear when I go back to work as I do notice that my ankle and lower leg do get swollen after a lot of walking. .Be Well
