Compression stockings

i had my knee replacement last Friday and have been told to wear the stockings for 6 weeks. Is this normal? And do you have to wear them in bed at night?  It's so hot! My knee is very stiff today and brushing coming out.

    Hi Elaine

I am know 3 months post op for TKR,and yes you do have to wear the socks day and night for 6 weeks. My knee is still stiff and feels as though it has a tight band round it,but I'm told this is too be expected,it will take a few weks for the bruising to go.I found great comfort from this site, because you do feel so alone and not sure what really too expect.Hang on in there, and we will all get there in the end. Best wishes.

Hi Elaine, I was given 1 stocking to wear on the leg that wasn't being operated on & it was taken off when I left hospital.

However I was given injections of blood thinners every night & tablets ( not warfarin) to take every night, 1 a night, for 10 days after discharge, 14 days in total. Can't remember what they were called but began with a G!

Having said that I wore compression hosiery as soon as I could bend my knee enough to get them on. I've worn them since 2015 due to a healed leg ulcer & PTM.

I was told compression hosiery can be worn at night but I prefer to take them off. if you are very immobile, wear them at night too. They are not uncomfortable once on, just a pain putting on until you get used to it! Doubly difficult with a not too bendy knee!!

    All the best

Lots of different advice given by different specialists, and depeding I suppose on our personal medical history!  I injected blood thinners  daily for six weeks.  no stockings thank heavens .. but it seems to vary from country to country. this is spain . .no stockings here.  I don't believe compression stockings are a particularly new idea . . .

It's amazing how opinions differ. Ive been told to wear them 24/7 for 6 weeks!  Seems excessive. And so uncomfortable.

Yes six weeks 24/7 - best for avoiding blood clots.  To make it easier to get them on and off put a sandwich bag over the front of your foot first - makes it really easy!

I only had the stockings on for the first day or two in hospital.

I'm not sure why some people have them for six weeks and some hardly at all. I suppose it depends on the hospital, the surgeon or the country.

    I'm in Qld Australia.
