I am 19 and have had really bad pain in my hip and ankle for about 5 months now.

About 5 months ago I was pushing my car and as far as I can remember I had a bad back after and since then pain in my hip and ankle.

The pain in my hip is more like nerve pain and can be really severe. In my ankle it's like a pinching/ throbbing pain. It's got progressively worse over the past few months and I'm so tired of it.

My GP first didn't examine me and just told me to take Ibrupforen, which had no effect. Then I saw a locum who gave me Diplofenac Sodium and recommended I get an MRI done. When I went back to my GP telling her I was feeling no pain relief from the Diplofenac she told me to add Cocodomol (again not examining me) and again, it had no effect.

I was seeing an Oesteopath who said I have a slight curvature of the spine but seeing her had no effect on my pain.

I then moved to Wales and the GP there did a straight leg test and said he thought I had Sciatica and again suggested an MRI but because I wasn't his patient he couldn't do anything. He put me on Tramadol, Naproxen and Omeprazole, which were brilliant pain relief but really heavy and have made me lethargic and vomit a lot.

When I registered with the GP here she's refereed me to physiotherapy which I've had two sessions off but both times the pain afterwards has been excruciating. The physio is now waiting for some x-ray results and says I have a lot of weakness in my right leg.

I've also tried a Butrans path but I didn't feel any pain relief from it so I've got back onto the Tramadol, Naproxen and Omeprazole.

It's just really effecting my life, I'm in bed most the the time, if I walk much it's agony, and I just feel a nuisance.

I've had a urine infection recently and I'm waiting on results to see if it's cleared up, but I feel so unhealthy and tired of this. I've also been constantly feeling really hot.

I've now been referred to a spinal physiotherapist in the hope of possibly getting an MRI but been told this could take six weeks and wont guarantee me an MRI.

There's no way I can accept my Uni placement if this isn't cleared up in the next two months and I'm so scared, I don't know what to do and just hating life atm.

Doctors are there for us, but 'back pain' is a symptom which varies from minor to major. I believe doctors are always sceptical of prescribing expensive treatment because of the ones who take up waiting room space with the minor aches and pains?! They always start treatment for minor pain, until they either a.) find the level of treatment which works, or b.) until he/she considers more serious/specialist intervention is needed?

You have my sympathy. I had really bad pain in my hip that went all down my leg for months. I had months of painkillers including all those you've named. I also had physio and acupuncture none of which worked at all. I also say a chiropractor but that didn't solve the problem either. I was convinced I had bursitis - like a very bad inflammation of my hip ball and socket joint. Eventually my sympathetic GP gave me a steroid injection right in my hip. Within days I was back to normal and I've had no further problems in the last 2 years. I went back to the gym, started running again etc. Talk to your GP about a steroid injection - it definitely worked for me. Good luck.
