confused 😥

I've just been prescribed 20mg of citalopram daily, and now I'm worried about taking them, I struggle with my weight and have lost 3st over the last 2yrs.. My doctor assured me there were no side affects but he is a new doctor at my surgery and has no idea of my back ground. He didn't talk to me or seem interested in what I was saying, he literally typed in his computer and prescribed me them - 2 months worth! And I had to ask him if he wanted to see me again once they'd finished or before... Now I'm apprehensive and don't know what to do for the best. Help!!!

    Hi Claire

Your doctor doesn't sound to helpful at all.

I know we are all different but, I lost over 35lbs in the first month of taking catalopram. The medication seemed to really suppress my appetite.

I found the medication beneficial in the main but I did get some initial side effects which were short lived.

When are you thinking of starting them?

Wishing you every success in your step to recovery xxx

I got given them today ready to start taking tonight 😕 I really don't know what to do for the best! The side affects sound awful - but the idea of losing weight is appealing, although you're the first to say this! I also suffer from PCOS and have a constant struggle with my weight (am still 3st overweight) what side affects did you suffer with and for how long?

      Hi Claire

I will be honest the first couple of weeks were quite difficult for me. In saying that there are an awful lot of people who don't get any side effects.

I'm so glad I stuck out the first couple of weeks as the catalopram does definitely improve depression and anxiety. I think you will find it fairly common that people lose their appetite on this med and i have heard many people staring they have lost weight. So please don't worry too much about gaining weight! You may be one of the lucky ones who get no side effects. But if you do they will pass quickly. Let me know how you feel tomorrow xx you may find your sleep disturbed a bit when you first start xxx

Here for you if you need me xx

After many years of taking Celexa. I found myself looking and studying from the manufacturing company of Celexa and taking notes on anything I could relate with and able to put the blame on and looking for others who had the same. In my case, intimacy with my spouse was one thing that was a big concern but also the amount I had been taking, 60mg. Definitely affected me in that area and I wanted change. As far as weight gain, not an issue. I think it does work for anxiety and depression after 15+ years on it. I do go in tomorrow to see a new psychiatrist. Been on a waiting list for 6 + months and took it upon myself to make the reduction from 60 to 40mg. Definitely better on the intimacy but may have been my problem lately having intense anxiety and feeling like im going to die. Not fun but may be as I've been advised from others here, withdrawal symptoms. So will see which route I will go. I am a TBI survivor and also now on seizure medication which throws another possible issue.

The first thing I asked my doctor was would they increase my appetite...I've been put on them, 20mgs for anxiety and Bulimia. I like you lost 3st since last year so don't want to gain again. I've been on them five weeks and my appetite has decreased....

Are you suffering any of the other side affects though? X

I was on citi for 4 months, and it didn't decrease my appetite, I also didn't really have any side effects, I actually put on a few pounds. I blamed the citi! But now I'm on Lexapro and I'm really watching what I'm eating and working out more, and have lost weight. But I think had I picked up my workout on citi I may have lost some weight also! All u can do is try it and c how it all works out for you. They say Lexapro has less side effects and start to work quicker!! Good Luck

Thank you! I haven't started taking them yet and doubt I will, all I keep finding out is negative things about them and as a working mum of a very lively & busy daughter I really don't want to be spaced out or constantly feeling sick! I certainly don't want to be putting on weight again either considering I'm still on a weight loss journey!! I'm going to go back to my docs and ask for different ones and/or maybe counselling.. Xx

Hey Claire, be cool dont sweat it the side effects (if you get any) are tempoary and outweigh the symptoms well I found they did.

If your not happy with your doc get a second opinion see someone else wink
