Confused

I was diagnosed with low B12 levels and further tests revealed that I had intrinsic factor.

I was given the 6 injection course and was told I would have another in 12 weeks then again and then blood tested again. 6 weeks since my last injection and my symptoms are back. Feeling vague, tired, lethargic, irritated etc. How can it be that I have intrinsic factor but obviously have low B12?

is it likely something else is going on? - any ideas/suggestions?

Hi Clare, There are many reasons why you may not be absorbing B12 properly. I would recommend the book by Martyn Hooper "Pernicious Anaemia The Forgotten Disease". Although it is titled Pernicious Anaemia, he does cover, very comprehensively, all the reasons why we can be low in B12. If you are vegatarian or vegan there is a higher chance you could be low? Good luck with improving things. Marion

I will take a look at the book, thanks.

Im not vegetarian or vegan, and would say I eat a varied and healthy diet.

My only other concern is that my mum was diagnosed later in life with Coeliac disease and I am wondering whether there could be a connection.....My doctor said at the next blood test, we will also test for this.

Hi again Clare, definitely could be a link to Coeliac, because that has an effect on the way everything is absorbed by the digestive system. I hope, for your sake it isn't that, but I am pretty sure it's mentioned in the book as a possible cause. Has your Mum had any issues with low B12? These things can run in families. My nurse at the GP surgery said that she discovered her own low B12, and then arranged to get her daughter tested. They both have the problem, her daughter is only 11yrs old. Do hope you get some answers from your GP? Marion
