Confused about dermatologist reaction.

Today I went to see a new dermatologist, I live in the uk near london and this was my first propper appointment with a dermatologist..

I have suffered for about 10 years only to find out last year what I actually suffered with.

I spoke to the man today, took pills and creams that I had been using.. These pills are basically vitamin pills with a bit more in which I have found helped me with my facial skin as my hs is all over my body, but mostly in the groin/armpit and top of my buttocks.

I asked him about diets, turmeric, intolerance testing, blood tests and he shot me down at all points laughing saying it's all rubbish and here's an information leaflet of what you have.. I am fully aware of what I have, I suffer with it daily thank you..

By looking at a lot of people on here it's maily from the US, is there anyone here that's from the uk?? What have you tried?? And has it worked??

I broke down in the car park when I left, just felt useless and the person that I am going to for help has just laughed at me!!

He has put me on a 6 weeks course of minocycline anyone had these??

With the intent on keeping me on these if my situation gets better..

I just feel so useless.. I know we're all in the same boat and I just hope that there is light at the end of the tunnel..

Danni I am so sorry your Derma laughed at you and resulted in your tears when you left. Nobody should make you feel that way even if they don't agree with the herbal route. Can you maybe ask to see another doctor in the department or is there another hospital you could switch to?

I have suffered with HS for about 4/5 years and been prescribed every pill lotion and wash there is (including minocycline). I've been barraged about my weight and even the advised the forms of hair removal I choose are the cause. Nothing including mino has worked so far and I was beginning to feel pretty crap with all the different medicines in my body.

Currently I'm on about my 3rd week or the turmeric tablets after reading about them on here. When I advised my Derma he shot me down saying the herbal route isn't reliable and hasn't been proven to work. My view is none of the medicine he prescribed helped but made me feel 10x worse (Roaccutane) so what harm can trying turmeric do? Lots of people on here swear by it ...

Don't be sad, if you feel uncomfortable with them after laughing at you ... Change doctor! You don't need that x

    Hi Danni

I'm from the UK, also near London.

Unfortunately HS isn't a well known condition, most folk I've conversed with who have HS have bad stories about medical professionals (mainly GPs) who simply don't have a clue.

When I very first visited my GP I had already self diagnosed myself as HS and the GP simply referred me to a skin specialist who luckily was very well known to the condition.

I was then referred for surgery and the skin specialist recommended a plastic surgeon, seemed odd at the time but it is very common.

I had surgery in Dec 2013 an I've been in remission since luckily.

There ARE experts on HS out there, it's just a case of either finding the, or being lucky enough to be referred to them.

With regards to turmeric etc, I absolutely swear by it and I'm convinced that it helps me stay in remission along with a a balanced diet and vitamin D and zinc tablets. I also use Head and Shoulders as shower gel which works a treat.

The bad news though is that before my surgery there wasn't much that would help once the tunnels and tracts were in place, the only option for me was surgery.

My advice would be to do some googling, different things work for different people and there are plenty of helpful folk on forums advising what works for them, it's then a case of trial and error and seeing what works for you.

The only thing tha would work for me was surgery which I can highly recommend.

Chin up and please take care.

I'm sorry to hear what the dermo said but like Rachel I'm going in to my 3rd week of turmeric! It's worked wonders!! But I've also cut out potatoes and tomatoes! I swear by this I started it all on the Saturday and by Tuesday it all cleared up and I've been okay! In all fairness though my HS is only in my armpits. I highly recommend tumeric! It's in the penny sale in Holland and Barrett they suggest two tablets a day but I've done one!

Hope you feel better soon danni!! Easier said than done but don't let the medical "professionals" get you down! Also if your having problems with the abscesses try putting Vicks on them it eased it with me smile

Minocycline and tetracycline did not work for me. It also gave me vertigo! Hopefully it will work for you. Good luck.

Hi Danni, I'm in the UK also, I've had minocycline and roaccutance, the latter being more effective but not completely and a horrible drug to be on, turmeric tablets also didn't work for me but I'm very severe, have recently had surgery which seems to have helped. My advice to you is to do everything they ask of you, take all the tablets and creams and if they don't help keep going back, they will eventually refer you to someone who actually knows and you'll get the help you need. I know this seems annoying but you have to play them at their own game. Good luck smile

Thank you for your posts everyone.. Means a lot and has really helped, I'm gonna just see what happens for me on these tablets. It's always intresting what everyone else has tried and has had success with.. Everyone is different, so I'm hoping mine will eventually be cured now I'm actually with a dermatologist.

    Hi Danni

Im from the UK, he sounds like as ass and should be struck off due to being a psychopath as he has no empathy!!!

I was lucky 20 years ago my GP disgosed me very young, he was straight up and said there is little we can do to help you, I can give you all the lotions and potions but your best chances are to help yourself through diet.  That for me the best route and only route, i cut out carbs, potatoes, rice, cereal, pasta and bread.  This controlled my HS for well over 10 years.  I done this cause I was afraid of my body becoming immune to antibiotics.  Now my body has got slightly more intolerant to other foods so im starting elimination again.  I can honestly not reccommend this route enough.  It might seem hard but the results are amazing and quick.  Everyone is different, see what works for you.
