Confused - onle

I am 50, female, colonoscopy in October diverticuli were noted and 2 polyps removed. April 4th I started to have really bad LLQ pain, in the groin area mostly, literally felt like someone was trying to dig my ovary out with a hot blade.. The pain was constant, and would peak. The 'peaking' part would have me breathing through the pain, and would last a couple of hours. This same pain continued for the next few days. My bowel movements were normal, no out of the ordinary gas or gas pain, no pain when I peed, no rectal bleeding, no fever, no chills, just a bit of nausea and appetite was off. Saw Nurse Practicioner as my doc was away, she ordered pelvic U/S for next day. Had Transvaginal U/S, tech didn't comment, but it hurt like crazy (have had them before and have not bothered me). Then I started to get really bad pressure in my lower left back after the U/S (I had back labour with my 2nd daughter and it was like this), so bad I wanted to scream. This is now Thursday, I have had this pain for a week now (have been checking my temp all this time and it is normal). Now both the NP and my doc are not in the office, so I can't get results from U/S. The pain was unbearable, still in my lower left groin, and sitting was uncomfortable to say the least. Hubby took me to,the ER as I couldn't stand the pain anymore. Blood showed no elevated white cell count, no fever still, bowels still working normal, bad PRESSURE in my lower back and now in my front groin area. CT was done. Doc said the results came back and it's not Diverticulitis like he thought, it's probably my ovary, but the CT scan doesn't show a clear pic of them. He knew I had the U/S, but had no way of getting results. Told me to come back in today for another U/S, and he would be back in the ER to go over results. Then he told us to wait, cause he wanted to check something. Came back like 5 minutes later saying he saw diverticulitis, I asked him how many he saw and if they were inflamed, he kinda brushed me off on this .... hmmm. Sent me home with a RX for pain meds, antibiotic and anti-inflammatory. Now, here's where i am confused with his DX. The only symptom I have is the pain, nothing else. Also, would my white cell count be elevated if I have diverticulosis ? My daughter who is an RPN, as well as my pharmacist are also confused by all this, saying pressure in the back is not a symptom, but pain is. Now today the pain goes right across my lower groin, like the bikini line, and I'm having pain on my right side now, and STILL having the left side pain 3 hours after taking pain pill, its like it didn't do anything for the pain. Ok, so sorry this was so long. Thoughts ????

So sorry you are going through this. I too do not have high wbc or fever. Same kind of pain. I've had 4 episodes since February 2018. Two with abscesses. The most recent was this March for most of the month and it was brutal. The pain was all the way around to my back doubling me over. Just awful. Antibiotics for a month did nothing. 3 cat scans showed diverticulitis and the third one done last week is now showing thickened and scared tissue. So now surgery that was booked for September has been expedited to may 6. This Wednesday I will be having a colonoscopy so they have a better idea of what they are dealing with pre surgery. I'm hoping for a laparoscopic surgery However I understand that that could change once they get in there. Keep pushing the doctors to find an answer. Don't let them blow you off. I had one surgeon tell me to get used to it. That he has it too and come back in a few days for a CT scan. Ummm I knew something was not right so I went to another hospital and was admitted with another abscess. Oh and I've NEVER been constipated, I eat very healthy with lots of fibre, I am gluten and diary free. I do not present like your typical diverticulitis patient and this is a problem as the physicians don't take you seriously. All I can say is get in their face until you get the action you need and want. Stay strong you will get through this.

I too am not typical. My symptoms are very varied and nothing used to show up until my massive infection that was mostly right sided pain( who has that !) But it put me in hospital, led to a massive abscess and bowel resection surgery last may. Now after iliostomy, and then reversal last august, i have the symptoms back again. Scan 2 weeks ago, see surgeon monday. I'm gutted. Literally.

you say you've never been constipated, but do you get the runs ? my mother in law has this and she would bleed so much when she went to the bathroom. My poops are normal. I questioned it being an ovarian cyst/s due to the fact that I also have PCOS. I went from November 14th/18 to April 2nd/19 with no periods and then i get a period finally. This pain started on day 2 of my period. I just figured those 4 months with no period, my ovaries were developing cysts from the PCOS., and this was where the pain was coming from, my ovary. I won't know for sure till Monday morning when i can call my drs office and see if the NP who saw me can give me the results over the phone. If she says my ovaries and uterus are good, then I accept the DX of Diverticulitis. I had a good cry this morning and told hubby i'm scared and I wish to GOD that it was my ovaries, i'm done with them (very premenopausal) lol.

sounds to me like diverticulitis in the sigmoid colon. i get this a lot! i now even have a regime i get pain in the lower left-hand quad. I go on liquids...take it easy. typically the pain only gets worse by next day. SO when it does, I always keep AMOX-CLAV (i cant take the Flagel/CIPRO because the flag makes me sicker than the diverticulitis itself). Anyhow the pain can include really bad spasms(which ded make my lower back hurt)iI TRY to cut those off at the pass with recognizing that i am having an attack early and get in the antibiotics in my system quickly. i am NOT a doctor but i have been dealing with this since my 30s and i am now in my 50s ... I have diverticuli in many areas of my intestines. i also do omething my doctor does not recommend---i take myself off the antibiotics as soon as the pain goes away so that i can get my gut healing with probiotics, high fiber and tons of veggies again -- I am avoiding SURGERY AND C-diff and so far even though it is a chronic condition for me, i am avoiding both just fine so far! good luck! its aweful but if you learn to manage it -- you can get through it much better! its recognizing it quickly thats key!
