Conquered the tube

well I've done it - at just over six weeks ive been on the tube. As a Londoner I knew I had to do it and chose a Sunday for my first time. Went fine thankfully. Next I have to go to the gym. Has anyone any tips about that? I need to start doing some exercise as walking and the physio doesn't feel enough.

did you do the escalators? that is what is scaring me!

static bike with very low resistance is what i am doing right now - i have one at home that has been used to dry washing but is now strengthening my leg muscles!

the up escalator was fine but the down one was scary bit wasn't busy do fine but wouldn't atempt in rush hour just yet. What sort of bike do you have and where from? I have looked at some but they were expensive. Sounds like a good idea

Fortunately I drive to work so don't need to use tube yet! We bought the bike from Argos a few years ago when they had a special offer on gym stuff,is very basic but good enough for me!

Hi well done! I will be 6 weeks post op tomorrow! I am hoping to have hydro soon! As I will relax a lot more! Where did you have your hip done? I am still bruised and swollen! But guess it will settle in time! Its not easy being a carer ,but luckily hubby has his care package extended! Regards Amanda

Hi Amanda. I had mine done at the orthopaedic hospital in Stanmore North london. Where were you? I'm glad to say I'm not swollen but I get very tired very quickly. I hope you sorted social services x

How did you manage to get it done there! I live literally 15 mins away but was told they don't accept GP referrals -mind you I had mine done at Chase Farm by a surgeon who has worked at RNOH and have no complaints!

Yes I was told that too but after being referred to two other hospitals and being told to "manage it conservatively" due to my age and trying everything to no avail I started to do some digging and on the RNOH website it says they do accept GP referrals so I went back to GP and luckily got an appointment with one of the good ones. She agreed I couldn't carry on and agreed to refer me. I live 15 mins away too. Where are you?

Hi, sorry for the late reply, I actually slept all night! Firstly take a crutch as its a visible sign and don't be afraid to use it. Take things at your own pace never mind anyone else. Be careful of "the gap" at some station platforms ( between the train and platforms) as it can be deceiving. When going down the escalator if you can get someone to stand in front of you and hold their shoulder - it's less scary and don't forget to stand on the right - lol. Also lots of stations - especially in the centre- have lots of steps, with no lift etc so make sure you leave plenty of time to get places as people an be impatient on them. That's about it  hope ou have a great weekend.

    Thanks Catrin,

WILL take crutch not walking stick - much better marker to the world!

Off to gym for swim outside tomoro....not doing gym till I get a phsio letter in two weeks time which they require apparently. Will be nice to be back tho, and I will snuck a little time on vibrating plates if I can!

Congratulations, that is a massive achievement. I'm 10 weeks post opp and have not dared to attempt the tube yet. I'm honestly dreading when the day comes that I have no choice 😕
