Considering hip replacement...with cerebral palsy !

Posted , 5 users are following.

I have cerebral palsy, and having had 2 failed arthroscopic surgeries, my consultant isn't keen to do a hip replacement, as it can cause dislocation.

Does anyone have the same condition as me, and have successfully had surgery, as I'm in so much pain now, I'm seriously considering going ahead with the op, any advice out there? !!!

Sorry for your situation Julie and I wish I had advice to offer but all I have are warm hugs. I hope you find a solution.

    Wishing you all the best

PS - don't despair that you didn't get replies today as the system has been down or wonky much of the day.

Thanks Renee, I have until November to decide what I want to do, so hopefully, there's time yet for someone to reply, with good news x

    Dear  Julie

i put "cerebral palsy and hip replacement " in Google search and it makes grim reading.  However it mentions a register for this type of work and refers to the Cerebral palsy help organisation so my advice would be to ring them.

you could also ask for a 2nd opinion at The Royal Orthopaedic Surgeon hospital in London or contact them and ask who carries out this type of operation with a high success rate?

i would worry that if your surgeon feels it would be bad for u then it could become self prophesying, neither do you want a gung Ho type.

wishing u all the best but please take the time to make your decision an informed one all round.  Regards Dot

Thanks for the info Dorothy, my consultant did advise me to search the Internet too, which I'm going to do thoroughly before I go back to him in November with my decision, whether to go ahead with it or not, once again thank you for your help x

Hi Julie I also have cerebral palsy and had to failed hip surgeries one being to fix a tear and the other a oestomy, which resulted in secondary arthritis. My current surgeon as I had a different one who originally did my first surgery, but doesn't do oestomies. Suggest I have a hip replacement, which was a success till the 3rd month and I jarred my hip from nearly stacking it down a hill in my chair. so I need a revision surgery to get a bone fixed and the psoas muscle released as it was very tight, plus screws removed from a previous surgery. I'm doing ok now just a little bit of groin pain still that the surgeon is still working what it could be. Hope you go ahead with it. As I found great relief before my little incident.
