Considering right foot bunion surgery. How long until I can drive??

Posted , 3 users are following.

I had my left bunion done via chevron minimally invasive procedure in June this year. I was lucky enough to drive after 2 weeks as I have an automatic car and only needed my left foot to press the handbrake pedal but I just used my right foot for it anyway.

I'm having a consultation next week to discuss having my right foot done but I'm worried how long I won't be driving for. I'm hoping not too long as it's just the brake and accelerator I will be needing my right foot for. If I'd have a manual car with a clutch after getting my left foot done I don't think I'd have been driving for about 9 weeks!!! I has my heel walking boot on for 6 weeks then had to wear it another 3 weeks as the bone had not fused properly.

I'm worried as I desperately want it doing as I now look like i have odd feet!! I have 3 children to run up and down to school too. I'm sure my surgeon will discuss timelines with me at my consultation but just thought I'd put the question out there to hear people's experiences. Just wondered if there was a special shoe for driving? Driving with the wedge heel walking shoe would have been impossible.

Thanks in advance

Not that I know of.  I had to depend on others. I live alone and I know it's difficult.

Oh. That must have been hard being on your own mind probably easier than having 3 young children in the house. I had to crawl on the floor for 2 weeks and hop on one foot as my bandage had been so tight that every time I tried to heel walk I got severe pins and needles in my foot. After 2 weeks I got the bandage removed and there was no stopping me. I was hoovering and cleaning and driving I was very lucky.

I'm so excited to have my right foot done. I love my new left foot and can't stop looking at it. I just can't wait to have 2 lovely feet like I used to have when I was young!

Hiya, I had my right foot done on 20th October and was driving by 5th December so I'd say about 6/7 weeks. I had no complications. Maybe consider booking it for when the children are off for the summer holidays if you can't get help to do the school runs. Good luck :-) x

Wow 6 to 7 weeks 🙁. Sometimes I wish I'd had them done at the same time but with having the children at least I had one good foot to hop around on to meet the demands of the children lol.

Did u have minimally invasive surgery?

Happy healing. Hope you like your new foot 😊

Hi Gillian, No I had normal surgery, got a nice 2 and 1/2 inch scar that's healing nicely. I had my right Bunion removed and two screws to straighten my big toe( I was told that sometimes they have to break a bone to straighten the toe but not sure if that's what they did to me) There is NO WAY I could have had both feet done together haha, you would have been my hero if you would have done that, I thought the same as you, it's better to hop about on one foot at least. I'm planning to have my left foot done next year, but will wait until this one is totally back to normal (I still can't put too much pressure on my bunion part of the foot, and am walking on my heel and right side of foot) And I love my new foot after hating it for 30 odd years, can't wait to have them both looking the same. :-) If you can get help with the school runs just go for it, or like I suggested book it in when they are off, good luck :-) xx

Wow I have had my bunions for over 30 years too. I'm 40 in 3 months. I had a chevron cut either side of bunion thru 5 tiny little burr holes. I only have one tiny scar of a few millimeters. I cannot stop looking at my new foot. I adore it only issue I have is a gap between the big toe and toe next to it but a small price to pay for no bunion and see straight big toe but I'm a perfectionist so all I can see is the gap 🙈.

I'm so over the moon though I truely am and fortunate to have minimally invasive. The procedure itself was so straight forward and I was only sedated and had am ankle block so was out within an hour of getting it done 😀.

I wouldn't normally look forward to any surgery but means I will have beautiful feet (minus the gaps lol 😂wink.

I hope I'm told less than 6 weeks tho. That will be terrible. I have my appt in 2 days so fingers crossed. I think even if it's minimally invasive versus the conventional way they are still sawing thru bones so healing time should be the same. Let's see what he says. X

I'm not sure that surgery is available in the UK I am guessing you are in the U.S. it however sounds amazing. Good luck in 2 days and with the post op healing, also I am sure the gap will reduce in time and your feet will be perfect 😊 x

Hi. I'm in the UK. They offer both open surgery and minimally invasive surgery. You have to be in pain though before they'll operate otherwise they see it as cosmetic.

Looking forward to my appt tomorrow just hope he says I will be driving sooner than 6 weeks. I live a good hour away from my mum so it's not like she can just come and do the school runs and I didn't want to wait til the summer and have my sexy wedge shoe on for 6 weeks lol. I love taking the kids on lots of days out in the summer holidays so I don't want to wait til then. Wish I'd got them done before the kids but they only offered a general anesthetic and open bunion surgery back then. Oh well I'm half way there to getting beautiful feet and the gap has closed up a bit so yes our time hopefully the gap will close up a lot 😀 x

Oh wow I asked about keyhole surgery and they said they didnt do it, maybe not in the hospital I was in, maybe as your left foot was so quick to heal I'm sure the right one will probably be the same and you'll be back driving in no time. Well good luck tomorrow and Have a lovely Christmas 👣😁

Oh no. That's a shame. I used choose and book so I could have it done literally where I wanted.

      R u in the UK?

My right bunion isn't as bad as the left one so hoping it will be quicker to heal with any luck. My left bunion was enormous! When I look at my before pic it deeply saddens me I had to put up with it for over 30 years!!! 😯

Hope u have a wonderful Christmas too x
