Considering stopping Topamax cold turkey

Posted , 4 users are following.

Been on Topamax for 7 months, started tapering at 50 mg. last week, no side effects. Down to 150 and still having my original side effects. Is it safe to just stop, I was on it for OCD. My other concern, if I'm careful about what I eat will I still gain weight when I stop Topamax or do you have no control over the weight gain and is it around 10 lbs. or more like 50 lbs. This does worry me as diabetes runs in my family. Thanks so much everyone!

Thank you for responding to my question lisainpain! So, it was after you stopped taking the Topomax that you became so disoriented? I'm so sorry you had to go through that. I feel so stupid for not researching this medication more before taking it. Had I known how dangerous it was and what awful side effects it has I never would have taken it! I didn't know what was happening to me, I was convinced I had some type of cancer, with the loss of appetite and weight loss, etc...what a scary six months! I just want off of this awful drug!!!

I do have a friend who takes high dosages for migraines which works great for her with no side effects... Mine was prescribed for back pain...there is no way I would take it after just the way I felt only being on it for a few days. At least my Dr was fine with it but he still hasn't found something else that works for the pain... Good luck!

I'm sorry you are still in pain without any relief, that's an awful feeling! I have an extreme case of RLS, I saw every specialist in philadelphia, finally I saw the guru for RLS at John Hopkin's in Maryland and he put me on Methadone. I was so desperate for sleep that I agreed to take it. That was

I'm so glad you got some relief....at least now you are off the topomax! I don't sleep either... Cannot sleep in a bed for more than 3 hours or my back pain becomes excruciating... I pretty much sleep (when I do sleep) in a very hard back wicker chair... It's ridiculous

oops, sorry, that was three years ago and now I'm struggling to get off of that. You really have to be careful and know what you're taking. Kick myself for being so naive. I do have another question, when you get off the Topamax, do you definately gain weight? I wouldn't mind 10-15 lbs but more than that would be upsetting. If I'm careful about what I eat will I still gain? I keep worrying about that.

I wasn't really on it long enough to really make a difference... If you eat normal meals I can't imagine you would gain alot...maybe a few lbs while your system gets rid of the meds....really talk to your Dr about weening off of it though...PLEASE DON'T GO COLD TURKEY! You never know what kind of effect that will have on you
